All Set For Another Scorcher Here Today

Jessy - it was nuts the other day. I'm uploading a video on YouTube of it now and I'll post the link here as soon as it's done.

We are supposed to get more thunderstorms this evening and rain all day tomorrow. At least rate I'm never gonna get my deck stained.

This heat and humidity are what's concerning me too. I am in Florida and want to start having a few chickens but am not sure how best to design and locate my coop for the heat considering we also have some freezes in the winter. Any tips would be appreciated.

After reading the posts here, I started feeding 'frigerated melon & veggie scraps to my girls when it gets hot, and they are actually tolerating the heat well now. I am very fortunate that my job lets me telecommute from home & that I can go out and take care of my chickens on my breaks. They see me coming & they know there's some cool melon and other tasty treats on their way. I like the idea that PriceFamilyFarms had about putting the melon & rinds & leftovers in the deep freeze. That's better than refrigerating them even! I'm going to do that starting today, as well.

I just came in from turning on a fan I've put out there by the coop to keep them cool in the afternoons. They stay in the shade, but still it's hot... so I give them a li'l extra breeze and put cool water a couple of times in the afternoon in their waterers.

I am doing all I can to keep them as comfortable as possible. Seems to be working out well so far. I believe we will see our first eggs in the next 3-4 weeks, so I'm taking those extra steps for their comfort, hydration, and nutrition right now.

The first storm has just blown through. The temps have dropped from 95* to 80* in the past couple of hours. It now actually feels kinda nice outside now even though it is still a little muggy. I might get more done outside in the next few days as the highs will be in the low 80's.

Marty - I was just watching WRAL's weather update - looks like most of it is going to miss me after all. I check weather.com all the time for my ZIP code and all day it kept saying rain by 2 pm...then it was pushed to 8pm and now 1am...On saturday when I got drenched outside both weather reports said it was just supposed to be partly cloudy.

I got RAIN!!!! I got RAIN!!!!

Tony, This is the first rain that we've had in over 3wks. Seems like when a storm would get to Lake Jordan, it would split and go north and south of us. I also had the same problem with sealing the deck. It rained every other day for about two weeks and it wouldn't dry. After I finally got it sealed, it hasn't rained since. I hope you are at least getting the cooler air from this system.

Chook you sound like me! We still haven't gotten rain in over 2 weeks here - my whole yard is drying out and turning yellow.

My poor silkies are hugging up by the ventilation vents under the house where its good and cool - I'm tempted to open one up and let them get under house - but be my luck they'd never find their way out!
