After reading the posts here, I started feeding 'frigerated melon & veggie scraps to my girls when it gets hot, and they are actually tolerating the heat well now. I am very fortunate that my job lets me telecommute from home & that I can go out and take care of my chickens on my breaks. They see me coming & they know there's some cool melon and other tasty treats on their way. I like the idea that PriceFamilyFarms had about putting the melon & rinds & leftovers in the deep freeze. That's better than refrigerating them even! I'm going to do that starting today, as well.
I just came in from turning on a fan I've put out there by the coop to keep them cool in the afternoons. They stay in the shade, but still it's hot... so I give them a li'l extra breeze and put cool water a couple of times in the afternoon in their waterers.
I am doing all I can to keep them as comfortable as possible. Seems to be working out well so far. I believe we will see our first eggs in the next 3-4 weeks, so I'm taking those extra steps for their comfort, hydration, and nutrition right now.
