The Sony that I have (sorry- was a gift so I did zero research on them) is pretty easy. I downloaded free software from Barnes&Nobles to my laptop initially. When I plug the Reader into the laptop, it automatically connects to that program. To get a book from the library, I click the download button at that site. It dumps it on my laptop. I then go to the Reader software and import the file. It stores the file in a giant library on my laptop. To get it to the Reader, I connect the device and then drag the book title (file) to the Reader icon. It dumps it in the memory of the Reader. It is pretty easy peasy once you get all the software on. I have only bought books at B&N so far (as that is where the accompanying gift card was for). I'm guessing there are other places that have them too. I do know that the Amazon people told me specifically that the Kindle books would only work on their Kindle device. I haven't tried searching hard for other places to get books. The library Ivan (BYCer) directed me to has pretty much kept me busy since.
I am a hardcore reader. I LOVE LOVE LOVE having a book in my hands. I kinda went into this hesitantly, as I love the look and feel and smell of books. I too have hundreds in my library and I reread them over and over again. I have to say that I am loving this new device though. It isn't a replacement for books. It is just yet another way to get to read! I will be traveling quite a bit with my job this year. I can see how this will be a great way to have something always to read. I have a 14+ hour flight coming up in February. I can go through a couple of books in 14 hours. With this device I don't have to pack a dozen books to get me through the trip. I can just download them into this slim, light weight reader. I will likely still go buy the real version of some of the books I download to the reader. I will always want the feel of books. This is just a way to make them more convenient.
I don't know about the others, but the Sony Reader has a size control for font size. The normal (small) font is about the same size as what pops up here on my BYC screen. There is the option to step up to medium, large and extra large. The adjustment is a click away.
