All those readers ie. nook, kindle

The Sony that I have (sorry- was a gift so I did zero research on them) is pretty easy. I downloaded free software from Barnes&Nobles to my laptop initially. When I plug the Reader into the laptop, it automatically connects to that program. To get a book from the library, I click the download button at that site. It dumps it on my laptop. I then go to the Reader software and import the file. It stores the file in a giant library on my laptop. To get it to the Reader, I connect the device and then drag the book title (file) to the Reader icon. It dumps it in the memory of the Reader. It is pretty easy peasy once you get all the software on. I have only bought books at B&N so far (as that is where the accompanying gift card was for). I'm guessing there are other places that have them too. I do know that the Amazon people told me specifically that the Kindle books would only work on their Kindle device. I haven't tried searching hard for other places to get books. The library Ivan (BYCer) directed me to has pretty much kept me busy since.

I am a hardcore reader. I LOVE LOVE LOVE having a book in my hands. I kinda went into this hesitantly, as I love the look and feel and smell of books. I too have hundreds in my library and I reread them over and over again. I have to say that I am loving this new device though. It isn't a replacement for books. It is just yet another way to get to read! I will be traveling quite a bit with my job this year. I can see how this will be a great way to have something always to read. I have a 14+ hour flight coming up in February. I can go through a couple of books in 14 hours. With this device I don't have to pack a dozen books to get me through the trip. I can just download them into this slim, light weight reader. I will likely still go buy the real version of some of the books I download to the reader. I will always want the feel of books. This is just a way to make them more convenient.

I don't know about the others, but the Sony Reader has a size control for font size. The normal (small) font is about the same size as what pops up here on my BYC screen. There is the option to step up to medium, large and extra large. The adjustment is a click away.

I have a kindle and I love it! I love that I can buy books whenever I feel like it. I can change the font size in seconds so that it's easier for my kids to read things on it. I can store up to 1500 books on my kindle and who knows how many more on my amazon account to be recalled to my kindle whenever I choose. I love books and read constantly. The biggest advantage of the kindle for me is that I no longer have to take a bunch of books with me when I go on a trip. I just take my little kindle and that is all I need. The screen isn't backlit so there is no eyestrain. It's all-around fantastic!

I have tried the nook and the sony reader but I didn't care for them as much as the kindle. I don't feel the need to have a color screen and I don't want a touch screen that will just get messy from my fingerprints. I also have the kindle app on my phone and can easily transfer a book to that if I have forgotten my kindle at home or happen to be somewhere longer than I thought I would be.

Oh yes, I forgot.

Nook can hold 1500 books, has expandable storage, and unlimited space on the online account, which can be shared between iPads, iPods, iPhones, Android phones, blackberries, any smart phone there is pretty much!

Also, you can lend books to a friend via their email, so they can read them and automatically return them to you.

Yeah, there is a free app for the iphone/ipad that allows you to read your kindle books on them too. I use it quite often when I get stuck someplace--like a dr's office--that doesn't have decent reading material.

Great info.... thanks everyone...

i'm asking for one for Christmas and a hard cover case... Leaning towards the nook or kindle.

I did buy a cover for my kindle. I think it was only around $25. It flips up, not like a book, but I like it because it allows me to prop the kindle up on a table if I my hands are busy doing other things. I have used the text-to-speech feature a few times and it is fine for a time when I really can't be looking at the page, but for the most part, I stick to reading it myself. The text-to-speech voice is pretty robotic sounding and gets some words wrong (usually names), but it works fine in a pinch.

This is the cover I have but I didn't pay that much for it. If you shop around a bit, I'm sure you can get it cheaper. http://buymedge-px.rtrk.com/products/kindle2-platform.psp

chickensducks&agoose :

I do most of my reading in the bathtub.... I think I wouldn't dare bathe with a kindle... sometimes I drop the book in the tub.

I still read in the bathtub. I just put my kindle in a ziploc! I actually prefer the kindle in the bath because I don't have to worry about turning pages with wet hands.
