Yes, it does seem to bother them. Cloudy days are eaisiest for them, because it's not raining, but they can still go out into their run.

clouds dont stop UV damage-(just the perception) , which they are far more susceptible to. you may want to cover the top with shade cloth or a tarp. i have those on my tractors and my chooks have normal pigmentation.

My one doesn't seem bothered by the light. The new chick is much more skittish and stand off.

I'd love to have a chick or two as well. I just don't have the equipment to hatch eggs right now.

I don't necessarily think that they're being damaged by the UV, they just don't like when it's bright out. That's why I put the wood on top of the run, so they can get out of the direct light yet still forage if they want. Plus, they may become more sensitive over time. Bino seems to be the least bothered by things. He's getting better with what bothers him. Allie was always slower to develop with everything, so she may just be taking her time.




If they're a pair, I may sell eggs and chicks. I'll have to do a few test hatches to see what happens and how the chicks are health-wise. However, that's far down the road and who knows if Bino will even be able to mate successfully with his depth perception and balance issues.

Thanks, I'll look into it and weigh the pros and cons. I want them to have the most natural lives possible while keeping them happy and healthy.
