We are first time chicken owners and recently acquired six "pullets" from our local feed store. We are starting to get suspicious that two of the supposed hens, though, are roosters. One of our Barred Rock's and our lone Welsummer have developed obvious pink tinted combs and the they both often "chest bump" each other. We're all hoping that they are indeed hens, but I'd like to know sooner than later if they aren't, as I don't want the kids becoming too attached to them! (We can't keep roosters in our neighborhood.) What do you all think?

I guess we won't be betting in Vegas anytime soon w/those odds! Supposed 90% sexing accuracy and we ended up w/a third of them wrong. I guess we'll know soon enough if they're roos. (I'm still holding out on the barred rock, as I've seen a few thread where some develop early. Bummed about the Welsummer, as I was looking forward to those eggs!) Guess another trip to the feed store is in the plans and hopefully we'll be 2 for 2 this time!

Agreed - a couple of cockerels. Chest bumping and other behaviors are not really reliable for sexing as both genders will engage in those behaviors fairly regularly at this stage.
For future reference, Welsummers are actually able to be sexed at hatch based on patterning (definition of the eyeliner, wedge on the head and chipmunk patterning) - it isn't quite as reliable with hatchery stock due to the degrading of the breed standard in the interest of sheer production, but of the four I picked out of the straight-run bin of Welsummers this spring at the local farm store using the differences I ended up with four pullets. Welsummers also have distinctive gender related plumage patterns as they mature - males feather in black breasted and females feather in salmon breasted,
