Little background info:

9 years ago we moved out of the city and to the "Burg" (Williamsburg). Back and forth to work every day, I have driven by the Mayor of "Bates, Mi" and commented to myself (sometimes out loud) that 1 of these days I would love to get some chickens like they have. Due to a layoff from work in April, I felt the time was right that I could spend putting this together. DH said" not a problem" to ordering a couple of chicks from Send Brothers (local Feed store, who ordered them from Townline) in their last order to them in May. I went to the store with the intent to order about 5-10 chicks and ended up going back a couple days later and ordering more which then brought the total to 20. About a week later when the DH asked if they were on order, what I purchased and when they were due to arrive, I batted my eyelashes and proudly said "Yes, all 20 of them" to which he just smiled and shook his head.

Excitement for the upcoming arrival put me in over gear to talk to anyone I could that had chickens. The Mayor and his wife and Laci (my Lab) human "Grandma Jyl" who turned me on to BYC and all the helpful members here. I spent hours searching through the group and we finally sketched and almost completed "Hef and the Girls" new digs. There are a couple of things inside to do before the move in tonight and the outside still needs the steps, fastening down of the hardware cloth on the one window and the Run to finish this weekend, but they need to have more room than the brooder they are still in. In hindsight, the DH now says it should have been bigger (the batting eyelashes did not work that time) but could easily pop out the one end and add on.

Thanks to everyone on here for the "pestering" during this process and the great answers I have received. Without, this would not have been possible.

Unfortunately the dimension is 8 x 12 with a height of 8 ft in the front of the coop and 6 ft to the back. This is where the batting of the eyelashes did not work (maybe I'll try putting on fake ones next time).

We needed a permit to build anything more that 100 sq feet and the DH did not want to do that. I explained that I needed to have a 3 ft storage area and he really did not take into consideration that it would reduce the amount of space for the chicks. After building the roost and placing it inside is when he looked around said "hmm" not much room once we place in the nest boxes" Those were built to hug up against the Chicken fence side (in between the 2 x 4's parallel to the floor) where the fence will be removed the size of the nest box. The nest box is open on chicken side and has doors that open into the human side for egg collection. We did a pocket door into the chicken area so as not to disturb the litter and when collecting eggs it will be closed and not in the way of the nest box doors.

Great job, absolutely beautiful.

My roost set up looks just like that and if you have not already done it put a piece of flooring on your dropping board. It makes clean up a breeze.
