Hi! I'm new to BYC and I am raising my very first flock of chickens this summer. Yay!

We bought 6 chicks- 1 Ameraucana, 1 black sex-linked, and (what we thought were) 4 red-sex linked. One of our lovely ladies has developed faster, larger, and with much larger wattles and comb. To add probable certainty, s/he crowed today. This is probably a silly question, but do you think it is definitely a cockerel?

We are raising chickens for the wonderful brown eggs and we live out in the country. So I don't have any problems having a roo, except I'm worried about eating eggs now. Is it going to be a problem?

Thanks for your input!

Thanks for the responses! Will it be a problem to keep him and eat eggs?

Yes he's a very happy boy, with all those girls. If you are asking if it's safe to eat fertilized eggs: absolutely yes it is. I personally wouldn't eat a fertilized egg that had been incubated for several weeks because I've been raised Western (Asian cultures consider such things very tasty, but I am too chicken for it). But if you collect eggs daily, you can't tell the difference between a fertilized egg and a non-fertilized one without a lot of practiced looking.
