Am I a chicken hoarder? :)

My husband keeps giving me side-looks and saying, "You are NOT bringing chickens into the house!" I look innocent as I assure him I never would.

The other day our oldest son said, "Don't believe her dad." I reminded them both that I am a neat freak, as evidenced by our VERY tidy house. My son says, "Like that's going to stop you." I thought about it a moment and said, "You may be right. After all, I let you stay in the house!"

Seriously, I can't imagine. I do have goofy pet names for them and I spend A LOT of time outside with them but I can't imagine bringing them in. Well, I can IMAGINE it, but no.

Good for you !!!!!! My DW is the same as your DH in regards to chickens in the house. I do hatch an awfull lot of chicks and keep them in tub brooders at the other end of the house, but at 2 wks of age they go out regardless. She will not waiver on this and I don't blame her, I kinda like having a neat clean house as well. I have met some house chicken people who actually raise them in their homes or big adult house coops LOL. And I gotta say it's mega nasty, I don't care how much they think or say they clean, we all raise chickens so you can't pull that line on us LOL. So given what you have said I think you will be fine and Normal LOL.

Yay, I'm normal!

Hi Cathy!

I originally wanted about four laying hens too. *cough cough* And like you, the more I see and read here the more I feel compelled to EXPAND! If not for the fact that I'm an insomniac, it wouldn't be a problem. Unfortunately, I sit here reading while everyone else is a sleep and the house is so quiet I have nothing to do but dream of new chicken breeds and new chicken things.

I'm so glad you get to have those chickens! The coop for 30 sounds way cool! Once you're finished with it and have those chickens, I hope you post pictures!

I'm just thrilled that hubby is on board!! I am on al list for chicks mid summer from a local hertiage town so part of me is happy with waiting since one of the breeds I REALLY REALLY want are Chanteclers and I SHOULD be able to get some through them... Hubby mentioned maybe having to go through a hatchery like I was originally thinking of doing but their minimum is 25. I told DH this and gave me this look like I was an alien then said "yeah, and?" I LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE this!!! I seriously need to win the lotto so I can build a HUGE coop and get way more chickens! I have a big pick-up truck, AC in the cab, can drive long distances... hehehe Life is grand. I'm also very happy to see that most ppl here are in the same boat... we NEED more

Pics I will post as soon as things start to happen

I'm looking forward to those pics! I hope I catch the thread when you post them.

And I've never heard of Chanteclers. *runs to look them up*

Yep, you can always sell eggs. Our hens produce way more eggs than we could ever eat but I love selling them. When people come, I'm happy to show them around the place, let them pet the pony, see where the chickens are kept. It's loads of fun and I'm loving it too!

You HAVE joined a support group for chicken addicts... but we usually don't use such offensive language ... it goes against our nature to tell someone they don't need any more chickens!

That cracked me up! I wasn't really expecting anyone to discourage me. At least, I was hoping they wouldn't!

There's a distinct difference between want and need. Want you can live without, but NEED... there's no living without. For example, you may want a new IPod because it has more memory, can do this or that, you can live without it...

you NEED a certain breed of chicken because the mental anguish of living without the new addition just isn't healthy

more chickens are a definate NEED!

Chickens for good mental health. I can totally get behind that.

I can't help it I want those dark chocolate looking eggs and green eggs, (I lost my green egg layer) so I need 2 to replace her right that way if I lose one I still have one. Chicken math I understand.

Which hens lay chocolate colored eggs? I totally need one or... err... make that a few!

I agree with you about when to recommend someone not get any more chickens. I hate to see chickens living in crowded, filthy conditions. I'm all about quality of life for my hens. When they're happy and cooing, I'm happy too.

I've been thinking about getting some guineas, too, as I've heard they're great at sounding the alarm when predators are near.
