Am I a chicken hoarder? :)

OH yes, to continue my need for a fully colored egg carton, I have 6 Welsummer pullets and 3 Black Maran pullets and 2 Black Maran roo's (one will stay after they mature) and I will try for the olive eggs with my EE's and the Maran roo.

I also have 11, EE's 6 Salmon Favorelle, 6 Speckled Sussex, 2 BR, 1 SLW, 1 RIR, 1 BO, and one white crested black polish.

I am glad to hear that others have problems counting chickens. I swear I have tried and tried to stand there and count and they move, its all over my brain fries. I do the counting in breeds and so far I can keep track that way....UGH

We know several people who swear by them. I'm also thinking about buying a few. But only because we NEED them.

We need them because something killed our chickens and we didn't hear anything.
This is as good a reason as any. :) Now I have a good argument to convince my family

it's true what they say about a silver lining in everything; we get to replace our dead chicks and gain a few guineas

I can't imagine losing that many hens. It must have been absolutely devastating. It sounds like the guineas might at least be able to sound the alert for you. You have a wonderful attitude, by the way. I'm impressed by the way you're looking for a silver lining. I suppose we can always find one if we're only willing to look!

Well it does look like my long wait for marans might be coming to an end in a little over a month then if my 2 new EE lays green eggs then I am good I have 3 Bantam EE's that lay blue eggs then I will be okay for a while.

I'm a country girl through and through. We have a small family farm and we absolutely love it. We have about 2 1/2 acres in pasture dedicated to the hens and another pasture for our two horses. We feel very fortunate. We also always grow a garden. This year, because we are striving for sustainability, we are growing a huge organic garden and hope to sell produce, including fruits and nuts from our trees. It's hard to make any real money with a small family farm but it puts a little change in our pockets and more than anything, it's good for the soul.

Back in the day, when I was in college and living in a city, I used to hum that old song, "Give me land lots of land 'neath the starry, starry sky. Don't fence me in!"

I hope you find your own piece of paradise - a beautiful piece of land 'neath a blue and starry sky.

I did a bit of research this afternoon and I am now on the lookout for Welsummer pullets! Then, maybe I'll add a couple of Marans! I obviously need more chickens. There are so many cool breeds out there and I love to pack cartons of mixed color eggs.

I'm laughing at "then I might be okay FOR AWHILE."

I also am so longing for the country I am from farm stock and living in town really does not suit me. I want some land so I don't have to worry about seeing a neighbor.

My mom used to say of my dad, You can take the boy out of the country but you can't take the country out of the boy. It's just as true for girls. I'm convinced that those of us born in the country have country in our blood. I hope you find your own piece of land, without even shouting distance neighbors.
