Ok I haven't been saying anything until now. My friends decided that they were going to have like a chicken farm at their place over the spring. Over the summer they have built a wire/plastic/wooden pen outback on asphalt. It's a very nice pen that they built and very secure. The problem is they clean it maybe....every 1-3 months. They put 3 bales of straw down for the flooring. They have metal roosting poles for them to roost on. They have no nestboxes. They have the wrong type of feeders. WAY to many roosters in there with the pullets/older chicks. The pen isn't heated for the winter. The main problem is he is running out of money to feed the 30 something chickens they have in the pen together. Not to brag or anything but I have helped them clean the whole thing( which is bad on the back with wet moldy straw), water, and when he has food feed them. Theres about atleast 6-9 pullets in there that are laying but their so skinny they can't lay. Every 2-3 weeks they might get an egg even in the summer. With all this help I do daily I asked to buy 1 of their pullets for $30-40 because she is so skinny. He said "No we need her for our breeding and egg production thingy." I know he could of gotten atleast 2 bags of feed out of that money. I do everything I can to help him out but it seems like I can't do anything to help the chickens. I know when winter hits he will loose some if not all..but I'm powerless to do anything. What should I do? I'm so confused...

Sorry for the long rant but I cleaned out their whole cage today and my back hurts from caring, scraping poop off asphalt, and bagging it. It's hurting me because I can't do anything to help them...

If they're truly starving you should consider calling the authorities. I k now that's not the "nice" thing to do since this person is your friend, but if he won't help himself then maybe someone needs to make him.

Don't feel bad, you TRIED to help them.

You are so generous to try to help them by buying a bird and even more so for helping them clean their "coop".

You should be able to look in the mirror and feel proud!

If he can't feed them and refuses to take your help, I think I'd have to call the animal control on his butt. You tried to help his birds and he refused.

In my opinion cracking down on people who won't provide basic feed/water/shelter should be the AC's main priority.

That's how I inherited my neighbor's chickens. He didn't think he had to feed his chickens everyday. And 2 days after he stopped feeding them he told us we could have them because they got their last meal 2 days previous.

I was appalled by this to be honest with you, I can't imagine my chickens not having food every day or clean water!

But I agree, you need to call the authorities to have them deal with this problem. If he didn't take you up on your offer to buy one of the chickens because he wants to breed them... well, them being so skinny they might die before that time comes, which is HORRIBLE!

I hope something good happens from this.

And you are a GREAT friend to help them clean their coop out!

Ok this is not something I would normally say, but apparently you have the room, ability to care for them and want them. Steal em. That is probably really bad advise. It was my first thought.

I have thought about that lol... But he has cameras up.... Plus I couldn't taken like 20 roosters LOL.

I was thinking a pullet under a sweater and a sudden need to leave.

ETA: I have offered to take some of my food to them so that they could eat but he said their on a "special" brand... I have been sneaking them some but not alot. They haven't been fed in over 3 days.
