Am I crazy?

Im sitting in the veterinary clinic with my 9 month old EE cockerel Hiccup, for a possible dislocated leg. Have i gone off the deep end for spending the money on trying to fix a bird (a very beautiful one though) that is essentially a back yard mix!?

What a BEAUTIFUL cockerel!!!!!!

Sadly the news is not good. It is indeed broken. I can't for the life of me figure out how, but unfortunately it is.

I don't see splinting it as really helping. And I can afford surgery to pin it. Oh, and euthanasia is $135!!! Ugg
I would not recommend trying to splint this fracture. Your boy will be in pain with the slightest movement as he will not self restrict his movement like people do. Imagine yourself living with this fracture. I would recommend at home euthanasia with an ax to neck or cutting carotid arteries in neck. Look up humane butchering.

I did talk to the vet about splinting. He would have to be immobilized for a long time. And in the end the results are not guaranteed. With 2 other roosters and hawks in a nest across the street, i just don't see this as a good outcome for him. I have to think of his best interests and not mine.

I agree completely, as sad as it will be, i think this is truly what's best for him.

You're 100% correct, you have to think of Hiccup's best interest. That makes you a good animal care-giver in my book.

I am a veterinarian. Unless you can immobilize the joints above and below the fracture you cannot keep the fracture still enough for healing and the hip joint above that break can’t be splinted. The ibis in the film is a valuable bird and we can’t see the fracture. Don’t let Hiccup suffer needlessly.
