$50 isn't that much considering. Alot of breeders of not just goats but dogs and other purebred animals require a fee just to hold your spot for the animal that will be born at some future date. They don't even have the animal yet and can't completely gurantee they will have them but they still charge up into the $100s to reserve them. It's not anything uncommon to ask for a fee to insure the person is interested before you promise or deliver an animal. When I had to cut my horse herd into a more manageable size a few years ago I listed many of them online and had people pay me the delivery fee through paypal before I took the horse to them and then required a check before unloading.
