This exact conversation has happened to me on several occasions. After the second instance I decided it showed more of a "state of ignorance" on their part than insanity on mine.
Do I get picked on? YES, BUT I JUST DON'T CARE AND I'M NOT ABOUT TO CHANGE FOR ANYONE!
Yeah, and when he said they're "filthy animals", I said "Have you ever been around chickens?" And he said no. Talk about ignorance. He said he "heard they're filthy and eat their own poop". I told him mine do not eat their own poop and if he knows of filthy chickens, then he probably knows a filthy chicken owner. Then I asked him if he's ever seen a mangy, angry underweight dog, barking obsessively and left outside on a short chain far from the house. He said yes. I asked, "Well, do you blame dogs in general or that dogs' owner?" He got the point.
Later, when he actually came to visit, I brought him to the coop, and said "Does it look filthy to you?" I picked up a fluffy Silkie and moved her "fur" around and spread her wings and showed him her feet. I asked, "Does she seem dirty in any way?" The answer to both was no, she looked clean and the coop was nice. "Don't believe everything you hear" I said, and closed the coop door & stepped off my podium.
