Am I the only on who gets picked on for likeing chickens to much?

I know the feeling, my oldest sister (31) picks on me (23) all the time. It's more jokingly though, but I take it well, her and my other sisters use me for their jokes

I've been called a chicken hoarder as well, but then my other sister (29) chimes in and says that I'm not a hoarder since mine are taken care of and I sell all my excess ones and butcher the roos etc..

There's not much you can do besides not let it get to you, so what if you like chickens so much? Only other chicken people understand you... maybe you should find a group somewhere near you of people your age to hang out with that like chickens.

many who know me think I need to attend an addiction and recovery class....

Seems I always find a way to talk about my birds.

Dont really get picked on but my son says that everywhere we go we get delayed because someone brings up chickens and it takes twice as long to do anything. ie when he went to get a new cellphone the saleswomen turned out to be a member of BYC, took 2 hours to get a phone, when he went with DH to look at trucks the salesman saw my BYC bumper sticker and started asking about getting some chickens from us.

Dh thinks it is silly that I gave up going on vacations, because I would not sell the chickens.I just shrug and smile.

You can not control what sis says, but you can control your reaction to it.Some get off on annoying others.Annoy her even more by NOT reacting. Smile and shrug,or tell her to come up with something new already. You could be addicted to far worse things than having chickens.

I can think of things each in my family are addicted too...legos,snacks,sims,animals.....we all have something!
What is your sis addicted too?

I don’t mind the ribbing I get from family and friend and coworkers about our chickens. It’s kind of fun. They call me a chicken lover and I try to convince them that chickens make great pets.

What’s uncomfortable is the conversation with someone that finds out for the first time that I have chickens and who seems to be taken aback by this fact. Most folks are great and think it’s interesting that someone can have a small flock. But, there are these other people that seem to think it’s not possible. That’s when the twenty questions start and I need to go on the defensive. I get questions like:

Why do you have chickens? They’re pets and we like the fresh eggs.
Can’t you just by eggs? I explain that we are vegetarians and only eat eggs from our happy chickens.
Where to they live? In my shop … the coop/barn isn’t complete yet.
Don’t they get eaten by predators? No, we have five dogs that guard them.
You have five dogs too? Yes. I then fields dog questions.
Are they in cages, do they go outside? They are free-range, with an acre that’s fenced.
So, they lay eggs? Yes.
What about the chicks? No baby chicks, we don’t have a rooster.
How do you get eggs without a boy chicken? Ugh … I explain the birds and bees to the person.
Wait, you’re a vegetarian, do you eat the chickens? No.
Don’t they get old and stop laying eggs? Do you eat them then? We don’t eat our chickens, they’re our pets. Do you eat your pets?
Etc,etc.

Sometimes these question and answer sessions are not very fun …

Jim
