I like holidays more this way too. We find a way to celebrate them doing what we want,and not trying to meet *holiday expectations*. I'm sorry if my comment offended somebody. I was not meaning to offend, judge, or criticize anybody. Other people had stated their reasons for not liking/observing Halloween, I was just stating mine. Please accept my apologies for apparently starting a small hullaballoo.

Halloween is Celtic in origin. It was the "new years eve" of its day, as the year ended with the year's harvest. It was believed that the spirit world was closer to the world of the living on this night, and that the spirits could walk the earth. People decorated their homes with bones and such to ward off spirits, or left out treats to apease them, and communities lit bonfires and gathered together around them throughout the night. Plenty "pagan", since "pagan" refers to "non-Abrahamic" religions ... but you're right in that "pagan" does not mean "devil worship."
Yeah, don't go beating up on the Pagans. The Greeks were Pagans and they are the ones who started the concept of a democracy. So, Pagans get a thumbs up from me.

It was a great Halloween. I ended up with about 65 trick or treaters. Cool costumes, great parents. I'm glad the count is starting back up.

Yeah, respect on Halloween is a two-way street. It's better not to participate than to be rude to kids, but kids need to realize that nobody owes them candy and leave dark houses alone.
About half the houses on our street didn't seem to be participating, which I thought was odd since there are a ton of families in our neighborhood. What ended up happening is that we would get a mob of about 15 trick or treaters, then it would be quiet for a while, and then we'd get another mob. Some of them looked like they were in high school, but I don't really mind giving candy to a 16 year old if he's taken the time to put together a decent costume and is polite.
Still have a bunch of candy left over.....we were thinking about "reverse trick or treating": going to people's houses, ringing the doorbell, and then when they open the door giving them candy.
