Ameracauna hen or roo or too early to tell?

EEs are the same as Americanas - the names are inter-changeable. What is often misrepresented is that they say it is an Araucana when it's really an Americana/EE (which is the Americanized version of the Araucana). I purchased mine direct from Mc Murray Hatchery in Iowa (lucky me, I'm pretty close to them!) and they had them listed as Araucana/Americana and called them Araucanas or EEs in their description. The Araucanas have tufts only at their cheeks, but the Americanas/EEs can have tufts elsewhere (such as on their chin). Mine have green legs too...some dark green, some light green.

Araucanas are a breed with tufts (feathers that stick out behind the ear). They do not have tails and lay only blue eggs.

Ameraucanas have muffs and beards and lay only blue eggs. They come in a few standard colors and have slate colored legs. You can only get them from a breeder, not from a hatchery.

Easter Eggers are a mix of Araucana or Ameraucana with another breeds. They usually have green legs and have tails, muffs and beards, but because they are mixed, they may not. They can lay green, blue, or brown eggs depending on their parentage.

Hatcheries call their EE's Americanas, which is what causes all the confusion.

Can I add that they come in 8 colours that include: White, Black, Blue Wheaton, Wheaton, Brown Red, Silver, Blue and Buff. They will have black or slate legs. They also come in bantam variety in those same colours.

Not only can you not get them from hatcheries, they are extremely hard to find in terms of breeders. Those that breed them, are very few and far between.

The egg colour is varying shades of blue, but should never be green. Green can be a sign that there was a brown egged bird bred in generations before..

Thanks for that extra and detailed info on the differences! Where did you find that info? What I wrote is what I've read in various places (mostly web). Now I'm really hoping my EEs lay blue and green, but not brown! Don't get me wrong...I have nothing against the brown, it's just that I already have six brown egg layers and got the EEs mostly because of the colored eggs for my grandkids.

You can find it on the Ameraucana website. http://www.ameraucana.org/scrapbook.html
Or: http://www.pipsandpeeps.com/

They can lay any colour of egg, but coloured is usually what you get. The blue egg gene is dominant. :)

I have 17 ameracuana eggs in the incubator from 2 breeders. Here's 12 I got from one set.

They are a nice blue with zero hints of green. I'm hoping to show a few next year from this batch.

I know it's confusing and that they are often misrepresented.:/

If you go over to the Ameraucana thread, they are currently arguing over the egg colour topic again :S Even Easter Eggers can lay a really beautiful blue egg!
