Do I have a “real” Ameracauna? Bought her from a local agrarian as a Blue, and she wasn’t cheep (sorry, had to). I know the Blues can be black too, but need some experts to weigh in. She isn’t laying yet, although i don’t think that would help since EEs can also lay blue.

Looks reasonable. I don't think I've ever seen a pure black EE though ASSUMING my "was SUPPOSED to be a Blue Ameraucana" black with 5 toes per foot and black legs lays blue (or green) I guess she would be considered an EE. Basically an Ameraucana with bad genetics.

I’ve read that blue is the diluting gene of black…so they’re called Blue but a certain % hatch black (and splash). I only know what I read on the internet, though. Side note - is it five toes or four?

She is black. She isn't blue.

When you cross blue to blue you get 25% black (bl+/bl+) 50% blue (Bl/bl+), and 25% splash (Bl/Bl).

She is black. She doesn't have any blue dilute genes.

Not that I’m planning on breeding chickens….since I don’t have a rooster, but, assuming I had an Ameracauna rooster…

Her offspring would be black 100% of the time unless the rooster carried a blue or splash gene and then the chicks could be a mix depending on how the cards fell?

I love the blues - it’s why I got her for the “awesome” price of $40 as a chick (I know, ridiculous but they got me with the picture of a pretty blue one and said she was blue). She is great and not going anywhere, but I still want a blue. How do I make sure I actually get a blue next time, and why do they advertise saying blues can be black or splash? I’m so confused. 😬

Not sure if this will help you understand the BBS genetics :) it confuses me too!

To get a blue Ameraucana you will want a blue Ameraucana rooster or a splash rooster in order to get blue chicks!
