Glad that you're becoming involved. Good luck!

Nope, true Ameraucanas ARE an actual breed, bred to a standard of perfection, breed true, there are 8 standard colors and the birds must have a pea comb, slate legs and ONLY lay blue eggs.

EE's can have any 'ol type of comb, legs, and eggs.

They are not a technical breed, nor can you show them as such.

If you have a specific type of Ameraucana, you would say I breed "purebred Lavender Ameraucanas" or some such. Same with a hatchery, they aren't true unless they actually SPECIFICALLY say and what type they are.

Nonetheless, EE's are beautiful and you will get some COOL eggs, perfect for the backyard flock... enjoy them!

Ideal Hatchery, or no large commercial hatchery for that matter, actually sells real Ameraucanas. Also, both those chicks are of colors that Ameraucanas do not come in.

It is VERY common for people to either sell "Ameraucanas" and think they're so, when they're really EE's, or for people to tell you they're Ameraucanas simply because they're misinformed, stubborn, or both.

Either way, you're going to get colorful eggs.

Except from the cream colored one. . . That is likely a boy.

Well, as someone who has family members who have been institutionalized, I suppose offensive is in the eye of the beholder. While I don't think she was indicating I was actually crazy, I do feel like she was essentially calling me stupid.

So is the term Ameraucana about appearance then? If you have a wheaten who has greenish slate not blackish slate, is that just a 'standard' issue? Do they lay blue eggs? Would they breed true?
It seems that unless you are concerned about showing birds and keeping to the standard, breed is a very amorphous thing.
Got a lot to think about. Thanks

Nope, it IS a breed. My hen may have several DQ's for Ameraucanas. Frankly, I don't breed Ameraucanas, so I hadn't looked to check! She may not have the right body type, width, etc..but, she does lay pretty blue eggs, and is a sweetheart. Sure, she could be called a Non Standard Ameraucana, but its easier to say EE

Breeds have thier place, dual purpose, egg layers, they're all "designed" for a purpose, and all have traits, cosmetic AND confirmation wise, that make them true to the breed they are!

Would me EE's breed true? Don't know! But they are doin a great job helpin me hatch some Olive Eggers

Oh, and Bedste, reporting doesn't report you, it just removes your post. Glad you meant it that way. Just be careful how you say things.

Yay for colorful eggs! I hope you're wrong about the boy. I'll have to pony up for an incubator it seems if I want a true ameraucana. Thanks for all the help folks.

Hey PepsNick please show me where on MPC to order these

I just went to their website and all I see are the pretty EE chicken eggs. Am I looking in the wrong spot. It would be GREAT if we could actually find a hatchery that would sell REAL Ameracaunas

I just got six Ameraucanas from Ideal. They are the fiestiest of my chicks and are beautiful. Ideal lists them as Ameraucanas, but here is their description taken directly from the site.

Ameraucanas, known as the "Easter Egg Breed", are a multicolored breed. They have beards, muffs and a normal tail with a tail head. They are often incorrectly called Araucanas, which have ear tuffs, are rumpless, and do not have a tail head which gives them a bunny tail appearance. Most of the chicks sold as Araucanas are really Ameraucanas, which are excellent, efficient producers of large eggs of many colors and shades including blue and green.

Standard weights at maturity are males-5 lbs. and hens-4 lbs.

Hope this helps...Enjoy those beautiful birds!
