Ameraucana (Easter egger) climate zone

pips&peeps :

It would all depend on the genetics your bird carries.

My ameraucanas do quiet well in the heat. I have a friend that has an egg laying facility who gets a majority of my black/blue cull pullets and when it is hot outside the ameraucanas outlay all her other production type birds.

It could be that those lines came mostly from Paul Smith and somehow they are genetically predisposed to dealing with the hot weather from all the years of breeding he has done in HOT Texas weather.

I agree.

My Ameraucana's do fine in the heat, and they are black. Sure they pant, but all my chickens pant.

My pure ameraucanas seem to suffer much more than all my other breeds in our heat and humidity during the summer. The hens seem especially hotter. They pant and hold out thier wings while the other chickens act like they aren't even feeling it. Our chickens all get shadecloth over thier runs, misters, cold water and cold treats when it is hot. I love my ameraucanas and would not give them up but they sure do seem to suffer our summers. I will be glad when it starts cooling off again, for thier sakes.

My pure Ameraucana roo, Ramses, isn't nearly as effected by the heat as my EE hens are - and he is blacker than the night itself! He only pants after he "runs" or flies and has a screaming fit. If he doesn't, he starts panting at about 90, usuually.

Faun pants when it gets to about 85-90, and she has a blue/faun coloring. My more wild-type colored hens start panting at about 75 or earlier.
