Ameraucana Projects Thread

I'm setting up to do a crested cream legbar / ameraucana cross. Shooting for an Ambar bird. I wanted to work with buff ameraucana but couldn't find any... have blue ameraucana eggs from Gabbard Farms arriving Friday... fingers crossed. I have had terrible luck with shipped eggs this year... the last two orders yielded zip/nada.... not a one! I have absolutely no undersatnding of what blue is... barring I get but "blue" I haven't worked with. How does a Blue Crested Ambar sound? Obviously this will take a couple of years but I am setting up for gen 1 next spring. Have a legbar roo in place, now just need the girls.

If you crossed a 'lemon cuckoo' orpington rooster to buff ameraucana hens, all the offspring should be buff barred with beard/muff and a pea comb. Eggs would be more green than anything, and thanks to the sexlinked barring, they would have white legs, not slate. Just select the best colored/patterned offspring from that and either mate them together again or back to other buff ameraucanas. Just keep in mind that if you take one of the 'lemon cuckoo' hens and mate it to a buff rooster, you'll end up with the basic sexlinks (buff pullets and buff barred cockerels that would be impure for barring)

Just an FYI on why I put ' ' around 'lemon cuckoo' is because as someone that loves genetics, I hate that they call it lemon cuckoo when there is nothing lemon about it. Lemon makes many people think of citroen which is a diluter...

I'm still in the very early learning process on all of this and appreciate any help you have to offer! I have quite a variety of birds including buff, black, white, blue and I even think lavender (not fully feathered) Ameraucana, they are all very young and I really enjoy them and want to start breeding projects verse just straight pairing! I will also be happy to share pics and even exchanges eggs etc with whom ever is interested!

Have to ask, and no disrespect meant, but... why??

Well, the legbars are intriguing to me because they are autosexing... so the pt really is to develop a barred autosexing ameraucana type bird... or "Ambar". I was actually joking about the blue crested bit. Cross breeding does have advantages... hybrid vigor, for one. I won't have a specific direction with the cross until I see what gen 1 looks like. Sorry if I offended anyone. I'm still pretty new to chickens. By doing these kind of test crosses I'm actually learning a lot about the underlying genetics.

No offence. They're your chickens if you want to create a purple with a pink crest (that'd be so cool) it's alright with me.

Well, in truth... now I am totally annoyed with myself. I bred ragamuffin cats for 15 years and all I can say is cat genetics are a HELL OF A LOT EASIER than chicken genetics. I am totally humbled. I went to check my decision to order the blues and they are pretty much worthless as far as my plan goes... I really need silver to get an autosexing ameraucana. I've got a great start on my own line of golden cuckoo marans and I probably should just stick to that for awhile. The ameraucanas are just so adorable and have such wonderful personalities... I had a real goof ball ameraucan rooster running around here for awhile... my gcm roo hated him and started chasing him out of the electric poulty fencing area so that story I'm sure you all can finish on your own... I'm pretty sure it was the neighbors dog, this time. sigh. I will add, for anyone interested, the cream legbars have an awful lot of personality as well... this bunch I have makes all kinds of odd noises... nothing like I have heard before.... and I have a little young pullet who has decided roosting in the trees is the way to go and she gets everyone to follow here so putting away the chickens has gotten a lot more complicated... they aren't just nicely sitting in the hen house anymore. I have things arranged so the poultry wire gives them access to covered shade... its nice and cool for them... there are some hemlocks they can fly up into if they want. NO one ever thought of flying up into the trees until this little legbar pullet came along. Always one trouble maker in the bunch. The way I have my chickens set up it is actually easier to manage the marans... they are no where near as creative as the legbars and the ameraucanas.

No luck locating buffs and in a moment of mental lack of focus bought ebay eggs. I had wanted to work with pure good quality Ameraucana so I'm not sure why I did that... would like feed back on these pics.... what do you all think of these birds... can I call these ameraucanas or are they just easter eggers? I work weekends so I can't get to any poultry shows easily...
