Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Why do hatcheries advertise them as Ameraucanas if they are actually EE's? Aren't they suppose to be the bird experts and know what they are selling? This is frustrating! What are the MAJOR diferences between the two? I have looked at the ameraucana.org sight and I still don't know, maybe I'm just not looking in the right area. Can someone just please spell it out in plain english? Egg color? Leg color as adults and babies? Cheeks tuffs? etc...Thank you

Usually hatcheries label them as Ameraucana/Araucana/Easter Eggers...often times spelling Ameraucana - Americana. If a hatchery spells it Americana and leaves a description that the birds will lay a blue, green or PINK egg...you KNOW it is an EE. Often times people learn this the hard way!

The reason they do it is because they can. They are not there to provide the BEST SQ breed, bred to SOP. I know this thread is long, but you can skim through it and get the jist of how much frustration has been poured into this topic. Some people have contacted the hatcheries, requesting they change the name of what they are offering, only to be met with BS answers and descriptions of how they aren't in the wrong and see no reason to change their advertisement of breed name/info.

It does nothing but help to confuse the masses.

Ameraucanas...when you look at the pictures available on the ameraucana.org site, THOSE are the accepted colors. Look at them. The color of the legs can be blue to slate gray...not green, willow, yellow or white. The Ameraucanas have muffs (cheeks) and a beard. Araucanas have tufts (feather clusters near their ears), and should have NO tail feathers. The egg color can vary but should be in the blue family. Ameraucanas have a pea comb. When one pure Ameraucana is bred to another pure Ameraucana of the same color, their offspring breed true. EE's won't necessarily do that.

There is an entire thread about it. There is also the EE Lover's thread. If you go to ameraucana.org you can see "real" ameraucanas. Everything that does not fit that standard is not an ameraucana. How simple is that?

There are LOTS of pics of excellent examples of ameraucanas of the standard colors from the country's top breeders on this thread.

A major cause for the EE confusion problem is that EE's lack standard characteristics (muff, comb, leg color etc etc etc).

There is no single standard EE to compare with, as EE's are mixes lacking the salient features (listed over and over, even in the last dozen or so pages on this thread) of true ameraucanas.

Some EE's may actually be a mix of 2 standard colors of true ameraucanas, and be very close to the standard in most ways except color. BUT wrong color is a major DQ able feature and makes such a bird an EE.

It is also very easy now to get top quality TRUE ameraucana breeding stock from top quality breeders for starting a chicken breeding project. Little point starting with and putting effort into substandard stock unless you want to breed EE's as pretty birds.

Well I am going to unsubscribe from this topic and just be happy with the chicks I have. I just thought asking for pictures and some sort of explanations could be a great learning chance without having to go through over 11,000 posts. Seems I have ruffled some feathers of people who would rather treat me stupid (happymtn) instead of helping me learn. I see a lot of people saying those are not Ameraucanas, they are EE's and so on with no real reason. It seems to me maybe some people are just being mean and want there birds to be the only "real" Ameraucanas. I guess I just don't understand some people sometimes. See ya, I'm going to go hang with my criiters :)
