Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

If you come back, please take a look at my comparison. I know you said your chicks look like the silvers on the Ameraucana website but these EE's came from a local farm that correctly labeled them as Easter Eggers. They also have chipmunk pattern.

For the beginner Ameraucana enthusiast the differences do not jump out but those are EEs while this pic below shows Ameraucanas that have a recognized color (white).

There are other differences but as long as you are willing to learn and open minded you will be able to quickly realize the differences, and there are, because there are hard-working breeders who have helped to establish this breed.

I also want to add that sometimes people can be a little frustrated because people who are new to Ameraucanas do not look through the thread or do a little research first and people might feel like they are repeating themselves every 10 pages. After all there are many people who come to this thread asking for the differences on a weekly and even daily basis. I am a noob to the breed and I only have 3 white Am's that I am growing out (they are already 18 weeks old!!) and I still have a lot to learn.

Yes, please don't unsub from this thread, yadaguhtoo! The conversation the past couple of days has been a little testy but that's not the norm for this thread. I've learned so much since I started reading it. It took me a long time to get all the way through all of the posts but it was worth it. I've only had chickens for about 1 1/2 yrs and started with four hatchery chicks from the feed store. One was labeled Ameraucana but I quickly learned on BYC that she is an EE. This year I purchased 5 purebred Ameraucanas from two different breeders. I hope to some day be in the position to be able to breed AMs. The silver AMs looked like little chipmunks just like my EE. Here are some pics of them at various ages to show you how they compare:

My 3 Silver Ameraucanas (one died at 4 days old, one was a roo and had to be rehomed, and the third is our little Amelia)

Thank you very, very, very much cass, wava1vaughn, klf73, and chicksterjo being fairly new to chickens and this forum you seem to be the type of people that realize I am just trying to learn :) As for you dak, you are the type of person that makes me realize why I love my animals a lot more then I like most people.....so hostile. Cheers:)

And thanks to you aslo petrock...after looking at yours and doing some self spoon feeding (reading) I now think mine are 2 very beautiful EE's YYYYAAAAHHHHOOOOOO!!!

Enjoy your birds. They will give you a lot of giggles and laughs. Not to meantion a variety of colors of eggs.

I have some of Jean's stock....wonderful birds...but they are just birds...I can't enjoy the pure breed ones any more than the mutts I have in my layer flock. (Now if they every start laying eggs I might get a bigger kick out of them, cuz the eggs should be blue and I love the color blue)

I'm waiting for blue eggs, too! My EE lays a green egg but hopefully my Silver Am from John and my BW Am from Jeremy will start laying in the next 2-3 weeks!

If you're not showing, breeding or selling as AMs, it doesn't really matter what you have, just enjoy.

I've got a handful of EEs (olive eggers, actually) I borrowed DS's best Ameraucana roo to make that would easily pass the SOP as black AMs on appearance. Not laying yet, but I expect the eggs to be a dead giveaway that there's more than AM in them.

(Really hoping for some pretty olive eggs soon.)

Would be a waste of time and money to anyone for breeding pure AMs. No telling what'll come out in their offspring. Yes, I'm sure some of the more advanced chicken genetics gurus or the calculator could work up some predictions, but really, what would be the point. Better off starting with something you've got a solid idea of the offspring/traits you'll get. Like using the AM cock I used instead of an EE cock to be sure the blue egg gene gets passed on, since that is what I desired.
