Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

How do you keep them so clean? Gosh mine are such messy birds. Very, very cute

There is a reason one of them is called Dirt

But after their first molt they have started to keep themselves pretty clean. It helps that the dirt in their run is very loose so they can dustbathe often. They are molting again. Thanks

Hello everyone! I'm a new Ameraucana enthusiast!

Bought some awesome chicks from a fellow NC BYC member (birds from peachicks stock). These guys are growing up to be amazing looking birds! I can't wait to see their eggs!

That seems like a little bit of a contradictory statement to me. Don't chicken judges know best ? That's what they are paid for, their expertise with chickens !

We do trust and respect the opinion of our chicken judge friend. They didn't make him superintendent of the State Fair for nothing. Obviously he has a lot of credibility.

We asked our chicken judge friend again today (for the 3rd time now about his chickens, in particular his Ameraucanas) and he confirmed again that they are Ameraucanas; they have good form, and even if a chicken has a slight flaw, it doesn't discredit them as being that breed. i.e. They are still an Ameraucana chicken, not an EE. After all, no chicken is 100% perfect or they would have real pics in the standard.

Over time, we are going to post the accolades he wins at shows for each chicken and perhaps that will give his chickens more credibility and better value. How can you argue with a chicken that won best of show or best of breed ?

Can't wait for Nov. 5th for his first real chicken show ! (although he'll have to compete as a child and not be eligible to win $, but that will come in time)

Maybe you can pass along the word to her. Everyone is allowed to have their own opinions. Some people's opinions just carry more weight than others.

If still in doubt, I guess you need to take up your concerns with Cackle Hatchery since they sold us the Ameraucana chickies to begin with.

That's all I am going to say about the subject.

Curious, why don't we see more Silvers here on this thread... I had never seen one until this week and they are very beautiful and cool looking... Next eggs I get will include some Silvers, that is for sure!

I agree with yadaguhtoo.

We are going to unsubscribe too.

We wanted to get on here to enjoy a thread about Ameraucanas, not be attacked from non-chicken judges (breeders only apparently) that our Ameraucanas are not Ameraucanas (when our chicken judge tells us multiple times that they are Ameraucanas and not EE - they lay beautiful sky blue eggs).

How many shows and awards have your Ameraucanas won ? (if any ?)

In the business of he said she said stuff, I guess it all comes down to credibility. And I'll take the opinion of a judge over a breeder anyday.

If that is the kind on here (breeders that want to discredit others), then I guess we're out.

Thanks for scaring off another (not a friendly place that people want to be) ! What does that say about your characters ? Continue on ! (without us !)

Sorry, your birds are easter eggers. Hatcheries do not sell pure ameraucanas.

I see that Cackle's EEs have been brought up so I went back to their webpage for their brand of Ameraucanas and this is part of what they say:

Cackle hatchery's breeding program objectives for the "Easter Egg Chickens" are: to produce chickens with a wide variety of colors, patterns, combinations of colors, with a full beard under the beak and high egg production of colorful eggs. The color of their egg shells vary from pale blue to dark blue, to various shades of green and a few light brownish/pink eggs. Their meat is delicious and it has a taste similar to quail. We do not offer a specific color variety of this breed; however, we do breed for a wide variety of colors.

If they are offering birds who lay brown eggs, those can't be Ameraucanas. If they are not selling any accepted colors, then not sure how those can be Ameraucanas, either. Not sure if they mean they are mixing their colors or what they are trying to say, exactly. And what the heck is this about a taste similar to quail???? You mean they don't taste like chicken? What's up with that statement?

I was going to start a new thread but I figured I'd try here first. I'll probably get ignored

so when that happens I'll start a new thread

Anyway, I was wondering about this splash EE that I have. I don't know where she came from, but other than having green legs she looks just like my lav/split lav Ameraucanas. I say I don't know where she came from because I believe she came from one of Mike's (lamike) eggs. The only EE I have is a hen that looks similar to BB Red and her daughter who is similar to blue wheaten. The splash girl has absolutely no red on her anywhere, which I would expect if she came from one of my birds. Additionally, this girl is clearly pure LF (not crossed with bantam) considering that she is the same size as the Ameraucana pullets (same age) I have. The only roosters I have in my free range birds (both EE hens are free range currently) who are blue are bantams. In addition to that, for this girl to be splash from my birds, she would have to have gotten blue from both parents. The one EE hen who looks similar to a blue wheaten lays green eggs, so I don't hatch them. The other hen lays a pale blue egg but doesn't have any blue on her.

So anyway, what I'm wondering is if I can 'use' the splash EE to 'make' blue Ameraucana? From my deduction, she came from one of Mike's eggs. He did have an EE 'flock' but the roo was pure Ameraucana. So she is at least 1/2 pure. I know the legs is a problem and am hoping the eggs are not, but in theory I could possibly get blue 'Ameraucanas' from breeding her to the split lav boy? I'd planned on putting all the EE and Ameraucanas together anyway since I don't have an EE roo, so it's just a matter of knowing what comes out of her eggs.

Here is a picture of her:

It looks like maybe her beard is a little 'thin' (think I can see some wattle there), but otherwise she has the same shape and everything as the Ams do.

Thanks to anyone that doesn't ignore me
