Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I've never been able to get on. Always the error message. You can browse topics, just not ask questions.

I'm not sure if I'm answering your question or not but you have to be a member of the ABC to access their forum. You are granted access by them when your membership is processed. (At least, that's how it worked for me.)

I think for the forum you just need to register. That's how most forums are.

Forum states at the bottom of the Help tab that only members can register. (Register button is disabled if you are not a member.)

Oh. Ok. Thanks.

Any pea-combed female offspring would probably lay blue eggs. Especailly if the momma hen lays white or light brown. Or you could use him to make blue olive eggers if you have any marans or welsummer girls

My favorite cross is with giant cochins.

Properly bred, i.e. purebred, Ameraucanas are homozygous both for pea combs and O [the gene for blue eggs]. All offspring from a mateing of a purebred Ameraucana to a single combed breed should be pea combed and carry one copy for O, resulting in all of the pullets laying blue or green eggs, and none should be yellow skinned. A crossbred, impure for pea comb and blue eggs, used in a cross with a single combed breed will result in the females with pea combs probably laying blue or green eggs. A test breeding of any Ameraucana to a yellow skinned, single combed breed will quickly determine if the Ameraucana is purebred or not.

I can see how that is good for the forum as only die hards who are already members can post, so posts remain on topic, but the flip side of it is that many people get into a hobby by becoming part of it bit by bit, and if they can't post and ask questions, they will go elsewhere and get into something else.

Perhaps it also helps support the club by encouraging members to join and creating a sense of community. It really doesn't cost very much money and it helps to keep people properly educated about Ameraucanas and keeps the breed moving forward in a direction that is good for the breed in general.

There are other free forums around that allow folks to ask LOADS of questions about Ameraucanas. Like this one, for example!!!!

It doesn't matter if you are a member or not. As I said before- I have been a member for 2 years and it won't let me create a login.

If you have a question about AMs you can post it here.
Don't forget we have some of the great breeders watching this thread and also have the opportunity to get feedback from the PRESIDENT OF THE AMERAUCANA BREEDERS CLUB. If you were to ask a question that she can't answer, I'm sure she has the resources to find out.

I belive, and this is my own opnion only, that the breeders site is just that. For breeders to get together and learn from other breeders. I like the site just as it is. How many times has this thread been taken for a ride b the uninformed or curious? Those who insist that their greenlegged, peacombed, mottled bird is an ameruacana?
I say leave the breeders forum a proffesional site as it is now and feel free to ask questions here. The ABC forum can be searched and read by anyone, it just cannot be added to ( and thus taken off topic) by those who have lesser knowlege than they.

I am on the ABC site. I have never posted on it. I would rather learn from those more informed. They know the difference between geno and phenotype. They know like second nature what happens when you breed X to Y or Z or K. That's who they are!

But many are also here, and they will answer your questions.
The questions that keep being asked over and over again on this thread are things like:
What sex is this?
What variety is this?
What happens when you breed X to Y?
When do they start to lay?
Are this variety smaller, flightier, bluer egged, larger.....than this other variety?
Patiently, all those questions are answered here over and over again. Thank you to all who do

Unless you are one yourself, do you jump in the middle of a covey of brain surgeons to raise the topic of your kid's sprained ankle? No, I think not.
ABC does not need to repeatedly answer these uninformed questions.
BYC does.
ABC is for the learned.
BYC is for the learning.
