Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Well if DH lets me order in the spring I have no problem having a couple Frizz-Aucanas in my backyard flock! I want to add a few more chickens to our flock, and I must have some Ameracaunas. I have to find a cheap small incubator first. I just need something that doesn't cost much but gives a decent hatch rate, and I can hatch roughly a dozen eggs in. I don't plan to use it more than once maybe twice a year. Just don't have the space for a ton of chicks. If I knew I had the market to sell them well it wouldn't be a problem, I'm just afraid if I hatch a bunch I won't be able to get rid of them and will be stuck with a bunch of chickens I have no room for.

I think I have seen just about everything now.......I have two silver Ameraucana hens, Silverbell & Rudy. They are my two favorite girls in the yard. On a daily basis they provide hours of comic relief for our family and ALL of our neighbors......Silverbell & Rudy can both be insanely genius at times and find ways out of their covered yard and into one of the other yards...They ultimately end up back in their yard through some bribery.....But to this point it has been relatively uneventful....
I have a 6 week old litter of Toy Manchester Terrier pups here right now, two grump named Thelma & Louise......Thelma and Louise spend their afternoons in a puppy play pen in our big fenced yard, which is adjacent to the girls outdoor yard..... This afternoon as I was tending to my garden, I heard Rudy (aka big mouth) chattering up a storm...I went to investigate and found that she was on top of the puppy pen throwing a fit while her partner in crime was on the ground pulling baby carrots out of the puppy pen......The girls had finished their carrots, and decided to get some additional treats from the puppies!!! Both puppies sat and watched the excitement without too much reaction, as they have been raised around my chickens...Once I put some carrots in Silverbell & Rudy's yard, they returned to their own yard, and afternoon chores progressed happily ever after....Regrettably, I had no camera during this afternoon's entertainment.... But I wanted to share.....

I love my girls!!

I need some help. I've been scared to post because I'm afraid I'm going to be told I have a bunch of roos....I think 4 of them are pullets, one I'm positive is a cockerel. Lemme know what you think! (please)

Here's group shot. the one on the left is getting a lot of black all over so I'm pretty sure it's a wheaten boy. What about the one on the right? Why is she so light? Splash?

^^ Here's the light colored one. This was about a week ago, she's getting some very light pastel buff coming in on her neck

^^ this one is getting some light buff on the neck, the pin feathers are not dark like on the obvious roo and they are all buff

IMG_0006.jpg

^^ this one is identical to the one above. I can only tell them apart because this one has a spot on its head

^^ here's the 3rd look-alike.

^^ he's the suspected roo

Please excuse the dirty faces and feet, they were having a little feeding frenzy of wet chick starter after I got home from work.
I'm aware that at least one of them has a clean face, I won't be breeding that one but it'll still make a great pet.

So are my suspicions correct? 4 pullets and one cockerel?

I have one of those odd white Ameraucana roosters who was supposed to be a wheaten, blue wheaten, or splash boy. He's from a trusted breeder so I believe him that this rooster is just one of those sports that's been showing up in the variety. I hatched out some babies of his a few months back - the hen who parented them is a very nice wheaten from pips&peeps.

Here's what we got out of the mix:

I have five little girls who look more or less like this one - some are darker, some are lighter.

Then there is this chick - I have it leg banded as one of the chicks from this rooster and hen pairing. I suppose that we could have gotten it mixed up somehow, but it's hard for me to imagine how we would have made that mistake - it's a pretty simple process to leg band the groups as we have them hatching.

Finally, I lost a leg band from one of the chicks and always thought that it was this one who was supposed to be banded from that pairing. If it is growing in as a wheaten rooster, then it must be from that pen as I don't have any other breeding pair that would produce wheaten boys like this. But I don't know what a wheaten Ameraucana rooster looks like when it is this age, so it could be that this chicken has nothing to do with that pen. He's looking pretty wheaten roo though, right?

Ok...so today I bought 5 wheaton(?) "americanas" and one possible EE at a 4H event...the Clemson University Judge said they are true Americanas per the judging standard and as I read the breed standard I believe this is true even though a fellow BYCer was there and said no....what do you think?

Not the best pic...legs are a wonderfull grey/slate ! The dark one is the one I called EE...the others are what I question although I love the 2 I kept of the 5 (rest for mom) anyway! My mother bought a roo from the "breeder" who donated them and he is awsome!

* beak color is not quite like pic ....I will try for better tomorrow out in good natural light!
