Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I'd cull once their color seems it won't change, and their main features are prominent. (tail angle, face, body shape, etc) I usually cull around 24 weeks and on, when their saddle feathers are decently grown and their hackles are beginning to fill in pretty well. Do you have pics?

One of my Blehm Wheaten pullets gave me an egg today, she will be 6 months old on the 22nd.

I was so happy to find a tiny blue egg in the nest boxes today, all of my girls are either approaching 6 or 6 1/2 months old and I was just about to die from anticipation!

I'm happy with this one's egg color. Her feather color overall though is a bit darker Wheaten. I still have birds from a few other lines who haven't laid yet, so we'll see...

Congrats! Very pretty egg! I've got several girls who are beyond 21 weeks old, waiting for them to lay. . . .

I know exactly what you mean!! A couple of my bantams that hatched early this year finally started laying a few weeks ago, it ALMOST makes me forget how many pullets I have that aren't laying yet! LOL

Thanks Illia!

I used your tip to take a photo of the egg with a green colored one, I feel like it really helped to show the true color.

I've got about 20 pullets that are still holding out...

It seems like they are still getting all their feathers, it's so hard to tell, they are just so mangy looking... maybe this line just takes longer to mature than the other ones I have, because the other ones are gorgeous!

I can go out and get pics tomorrow so you guys can tell me what you think... I have a lot of hope for these boys, but they aren't living up to it yet!!!

But I was right.

The parents weren't pure, but they did hide Wheaten and/or Silver genes.

Is it more important for you to be right or to have folks know that there is no way in the world short of DNA testing to know what color genes a chicken is carrying?

Walt.

I think Walt has a good point. The knowledge I gain from books or internet studies, without the actual breeding experience, can be dangerous both to myself and those I pass it on to.
