Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Which is where so much of the confusion comes in. The APA has dubbed the lavender variety in several breeds as "self blue" which is incorrect by definition. AND why the ABC wants the term "lavender", aside from the fact that the gene that causes the coloring is actually called the "lavender" gene.

By definition the term "self" means that the bird is all one solid color.

The term lavender is a relatively new term as it relates to "that" color. It is not just the APA that refers to it as self blue....the ABA does as well. It has been called self blue for many, many years.

I haven't been breeding birds very long, and curious. When did geneticists discover the recesive gene and start useing the term "lav" to describe it?

Personally, I think pearl gray is a much better description of it when expressed on black.

Can I please get some opinions on these 4 roosters that are 6 months old to help me decide which ones to keep. They have been molting tail and neck feathers so they are a little scruffy looking right now. Thanks!

RE; Lav/self blue

To be clear.....for those of you who don't know this. I am the Chair of the APA SOP committee. I have an open mind about all things given to our committee, but we don't just change something because a person or group wants to change it. There is more to it than it appears at first glance...at least I think so.
Because self blue has been used for so long and is easily understood by judges, there would need to be compelling evidence that this change would correct an error or to make the description easier to understand.

It could be done, but who is going to tell the Old English guys they have to call their self blues "lavender" Old English Games?

Your District Directors vote on all changes to the SOP.

I like the first guy. Beard and tail mostly. I have some awkward looking boys right now too. Can't get an egg to save my life, but boy we have feathers! I am really considering dumping the wheatens. If I want to spend all this money on something that only produces 2 months a year, I will get more geese.

I don't think anyone from the ABC was wanting the APA to "change" anything already in existence. We simply asked that the Ameraucanas be called lavender, and for the color description it could refer to the self blue description, since that seemed like a decent compromise. We were adamantly told that it wasn't going to happen.

It seems (to me anyway) that as an organization founded on and revolving around purebred poultry that as new things are discovered regarding the genetics of said poultry (i.e. the lav gene) that the organization(s) would want to make subtle changes along the way to reflect these new discoveries.

Am I the only one who is seeing multiple single-looking combs???

Roo 2 and roo 3 seem to have a single or pea/single combo comb?

Are all these birds related? I wouldn't use any of them if they are...
