Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

If she is a hermaphrodite... can she be used for breeding in any way?

Or genetically do I not want want she had to offer?

I think I'm going to ask my friend if I can have this chicken back, I would like to see her in person.

Well honestly I think the nice blue in the tail is from the male, considering the top of her tail is typical Ameraucana color (mostly light wheaten with just a little spangle of blue)

As for breeding her, you're asking the wrong person. I haven't a clue how it works, not even sure how in the world her reproductive system works in there, or if it is even entirely of one gender.

At least she's more female than male though. The silver Jean showed was practically 50/50

It is funny that I have those beautiful White Ameraucanas. I never favored white but some one needed to rehome him and I did not have a nice male. And that same person was selling all of her pullets so here they are in my coop. Lucky me.

That looks like one of the wheatan sports my friend gets out of his BBR Modern game bantams. Except its a male thats hen feathered, or a female with weird feathering.

No feathers are just ruffled. No growth. Just interesting coloration.

I hope my question wasn't rude, but I just can't make out the shape of the body or its color on my monitor with these old eyes. If it's an Ameraucana it would have to be a wheaten, but I really can't see it well enough to even say what color it is........................ brain getting too old or just have tired eyes tonight.

No you were not rude. I am easy going. The little one is out of my Ameraucanas, the father was a wheaten/silver cross and mom is solid white.

Would a black Lav split have some light leak color on their hackle feathers? I think my roo is a split, and he does have some feathers that are half black and half light. If I were to get some girls to breed him with, what colors could I expect with the offspring? Also, what should I get - black, lav, split? Not too sure on the genetics and all with them. Someone posted the BBS %, I get that, what about splits like this?

I could try to get a pic of him, but he is rather skiddish around me.

He might be a split with some silver leakage. Not really a good thing if you are breeding for a standard. It could be one of those things that a lavender could carry that you wouldn't notice on such a light bird.
If you want lavenders you best just start fresh with some lavender or split birds and breed them together. They are becoming more available all the time.

Not to improve color, but to improve other things like feather quality, egg color, and size of the bird. I agree that you should not use that male for breeding. That leakage was likely passed to him by his mother, and the hens won't usually show color leakage like the males will. If you know what hen he came from she should not be used for future breeding.

IF you have no other options, you could use him, but know that female offspring could carry that leakage on to future generations, if you cull hard you could do it, it's just going to take A LOT longer to get where you want to be...
