Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Illia, Love the new avatar!! Just beautiful!!

I hatched some of Cindy's eggs in June. Got a pair of splits and one lav chick that I helped but didn't make it. I gave them to my chicken buddy who does chicken chores for me when I'm out of town. She named them Betsy and Ross, appropriate she thought for Ameraucanas! I hope they produce some lav chicks next spring so she can share some back with me!! I don't have the set-up for all the birds I'd love to have, so I lurk here and enable others when I can!!!

If you don't mind a few questions from someone new to all this...
If I understand correctly, a split is when you cross two colors. What two colors is he a split of? What color hen would you use him on?

A split is a bird carrying a recessive gene but because they only have one, they do not show it.

So black x lavender = Lav splits.

Buff x Silver = not splits

Thank you. It is starting to make sense.

over, once you loose size, it's so hard to get it back

Plus I prefer eating bigger culls than small ones

If they aren't molting, they're broody for me at this time of year.

Broody season is mid summer til late fall, but, our fall and winter out here are basically a secondary spring. Extra rain, slightly lower temps but hardly freezing, and less sun.

Finally! I got my first blue egg from my blue girl yesterday, and she did it again today. I think she's got the hang of it. Pretty egg. Small for now, but I'm sure it will get larger. Good girl!
Back from surgery for 2 weeks now..what a process~this healing thing when you've had numbers C 5,6, and 7 discs done. I can go out and check for eggs though.

DH cleaned the coop, and the nursery hutch for me today. He's been so good to help. And, I love seeing him talking to the girls..now that is something to see, because he didn't use to have much to do with them, now when one squats, he gives her a pat on the back, or, he actually picks her up! I just stand there and chuckle from indoors.

He comes in and tells me that he gave them some scratch. Or, they needed water so he filled up alll the containers I have out for them. Or, he calls me to the door to check out this or that when they come up to the porch. Now he knows, now he knows.
