Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Basil, the cockerel we picked up at Crossroads, crowed for the first time since we got him this morning!

I'm so excited! It really wasn't loud, certainly not as loud as the neighbors' barking dogs. At first I wasn't sure if I had actually heard it or if I had imagined it, then he did it again. And again. And a third time. If he doesn't get any louder (or at least not much louder), we'll probably be ok with the neighbors. I'm sure none of the neighbors heard him, my husband didn't even hear him until I had the back door open and told him and he was quiet to listen for it.

5 chicks hatched from my last set of W/BW eggs. 3 are 100% boy, and then there are these 2. I am thinking one boy and one girl but you guys tell me (please

) before I give away more of my pullets....

I think girl (one and only) but the dark feathers worry me. She is also very dominant in personality/behaves like a boy.

I think boy but WAY lighter than the other 3 boys so??

And how is the leg color on these guys?

1st is definitely a pullet. 2nd is definitely a cockerel. Leg color should develop with time.

I had a few like this in my last batch. I gave 2 to Chicken Stalker thinking they were both cockerels, but am now convinced one was a pullet. Forgot to ask her. I kept 3 others, they are all pullets and their color is just darker than expected.

I think the second one is a girl too. There have been a few people hatch wheatens this year with a kind of mottled look to them.

If it were a cockerel there would be more color on the breast.

Good eye Jean. The pullets I kept aren't mottled, just dark. (Though I had a Silver pop up with mottled feathers.) Where is all this mottling coming from?
I'd love to see how this one feathers out Phage.

Yeah- you're right- look at the back of the neck. I had one like that as well this summer, but she feathered in to look like a normal wheaten.
