Crests, yes it is a DQ.

Well there go some more Ebay eggs that have not panned out. Wonder what I should do with those younger pullets, I have no good roo to breed to them now. I've been getting pretty bummed out, first it was poor quality blue copper Marans, then "show quality" Rhode Island Reds that turned out not to be, now these. All from eggs purchased on Ebay. Never again.

Your best bet with eggs is to contact somebody through one of the breed clubs. Ask to see pictures of their birds and what bloodlines they came from.

Yeah, the Orloffs are working out, so far so good. I really like them, very friendly and curious birds, and sooo pretty

I will check out the feet on those 2 young pullets. I laid in bed this morning pondering a massive chicken slaughter. Honestly, I had such high hopes for these birds, and many of them, like the Ameraucanas, are not what I hoped for. Is the splash pullet worth breeding for anybody, or do people not keep the splashes? I really thought she was light blue--what do I know

The first ones, with the crests, were supposed to be bloodlines from Ameraucanas from Paul Smith in TX and Jean Ribbeck in WA. I understood those to be good, but I don't know how long ago the breeder had acquired the stock and what kind of breeding program was being used. I'm new to this breed, only had EEs before, could someone explain the problem with crests? Is it a common occurrence? I assume using the male on the two young pullets that don't have it is not a good idea. Thanks for feedback.

the last one looks blue to me. Here is my splash chick https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/uploads/62282_photo-3.jpg

OK, thats one and one, blue or splash? Anybody else care to tell me what color this pullet is (she's 5-1/2 months old). I thought the splashes always had random darker feathers, like the splash pic from Christie.

That is a splash- she just has more blue in her base color.

Congrats Jean! Fingers crossed for lots of chocolates!

There is a wet one still, so I don't know what color it is yet.

Now for the LF eggs to hatch. I think the next batch is due next week.

Congratulations!!

From this picture...she looks like a light splash to me. Doesn't she have dark spots on her? Especialy on the left side of chest ans tail? That is what I see on my screen. Maybe a bad picture?
