LGBTQ+ Poultry Keepers

Hey, that was a neat magic trick! 🧙‍♂️😁

Ohmygoodness, I didn't see that! How cute, they're friends!
(...Of course they are 😄!)

6 months!?:old Wowza! I mean, I collect rocks, so I'm used to them not doing anything . So they split and duplicate or just grow? Such an interesting species; I could see how they could grow on you (I mean if you have 6 months to wait or so...:p)

Alright, well, I hope you all are having a fantastic Saturday!
I've only been keeping them for 1 year so I really don't know a whole lot about them. @fluffycrow knows way more than I do. Mine don't do anything either. :p One starting splitting last November, the other 3 started early February. But they only barely split and just sat there until June! Something wasn't right here so I went online and read through Reddit groups and sure enough others have had this issue. I hadn't been watering as you are supposed to let the new emerging plant use the moisture from the old leaves. But several people said to go ahead and water stuck Lithops. Sure enough, they began growing and splitting! But I will say that I think our nights are too cold for them. We get down to 50F every summer night and I think this slows them down as well. Strange but cute little plants they are. 🥰

Yeah our Jade plants (Crassula ovata ;)) inspired me to get some Dwarf Jade plants (I ordered Crassula ovata 'Crosby's Compact' and Portulacaria afra 'Minima Lilliput'.) So we'll see how that goes! (I'm hoping since they're small they'll grow fairly fast), and maybe I'll look into getting them some lights like you suggested💡to help them through the 'W' word 🥶 (and plus I'm impatient.)

I have learned many of the things I'm doing wrong with my Jade. (Like watering the starts before any new growth! Like who would think they would send out roots when they have NO water and die when you water them... I actually think I love that, counter-intuitive, but resourceful!) What a cool plant.
I had a cat named Jade. She was cool, too. We named her Jade because she would chew on the leaves.

Her OG name was "Harvey," obviously. 😄

See now I only know them as Jade plants, and I had NO idea they were in the Crassula family! I should have gone with the Dwarf variety, good grief, what was I thinking! :barnie 😂 We definitely learn as we go with these plants and sometimes it takes months or years for things to crop up that we are doing something wrong.

Ahhh... the W word! 🤣 It will be here before we know it! I just ordered some new grow lights. I had been using florescents and they just keep getting weaker, burning out, and they put out too much heat. My Baseball cactus (Euphorbia obesa) got a little burn spot on the top from heat. I've got a fan running on them now but these lights gotta go. I ordered a Spider Farmer and some Barrina shelf lights. More powerful and run cooler. They should be here next week, I am egg-cited!!

Beautiful kitty there, 😍 I love Calico cats!! :love

Actually, I lied, yours is Crassula arborescens 'Undulatifolia' (that makes sense...) Oooh, new lights! I bet they are going to love it. I will have to check those out!
I'm pretty sure I've burned some plants with those cheaper grow lights, too. Hopefully your cactus isn't too worse for wear--he'll be getting his royal spa cacti treatment, soon!
I hope you're having a great Saturday! Always nice talking with you! :D

Yeah I've burned a few plants with cheap grow lights. I've learned to go with reliable good name brand lights from now on. You should check some good ones out too Jen!

I hope you are having a wonderful Saturday up there too! 🥰

So since our older hens aren't laying as much anymore, I've been trying to convince my dad to start buying eggs from the non-profit rescue that puts out eggs from her own flock.
It's a slow progress as he's still buying Wilcox eggs from Costco.
I know that I could buy the eggs but usually by the time I remember about them, dad has already gotten eggs.

Congratulations on the new pups already! :woot These Haworthias grow so fast, in a few years she will be huge!

Wow, yes this is early for flowers on Lithops! 🌺 But they are so pretty when they do, aren't they?! My lithops FINALLY finished splitting, good grief, took 6 months to break out and grow! Mine will probably be too exhausted to flower this fall. :p

I hope so!

WOW, she truly took her time! 6 months, that’s got to be a record of some sort! Hopefully yours will flower as well, but you’re probably right in saying that she won’t. Their flowers are absolutely gorgeous though

Thank you TwoCrows, you give me far too much credit.

They definitely are fun little plants. Boring for some, but probably my favourite or second favourite out of all the succulents. They don’t grow like normal succulents, they split. Think of it as a reptile shedding its skin. Unlike a reptile, each split has a chance of the plant splitting into two. That is the only way these plants “grow”. The growth of each particular lithop is rather minimal, and they aren’t really supposed to stick out of the dirt too much. Of course, seedlings are different. Those grow quite a bit, but it’s a slow process. Lithops split once a year, after they are done flowering (and if they’re too young to flower, usually by November/December).

Here is one of mine, blending quite expertly with the soil

. Isn’t nature just amazingly innovative?
