) Any books that are must haves for the serious breeders chicken library? I am in desperate need of a good book! I really want to put down my iPad for a while. No I don't!

Me. I gave some eggs to a few people. And guess what- they all have dark legs so far.
Not sure who else is working on a seperate one.

Awesome, can you post pics of your best work so far? I´m having the wildest idea of how to have Black/Slate shanks on a Barred/cuckoo roosters, I´ve been thinking about starting the project here in Nicaragua and check with you guys to see how we have progressed

Only hatching the f2s at this point. I have an auction with some chick pics here:

Sorry my pics are so crappy- 1/2 the Ams are moulting now. Genelda took some really cute shots though.

If you read through the ABC forum though, they are stating that even though the legs may be dark, they are not considered "slate". And we may end up with roos with light legs. Have to wait til these grow up a bit.

My white birds carry the barring gene and I had lots of birds over the past few years that had white legs with patches of slate on them. I have been working on breeding it out and have lots of youngsters with dark legs this year.

Thanks HappyMtn I agree, what you are seeing is Pigment on the epidermis not on the dermis. well I guess its going to be up to me to bring dermal melanin to this breed, I just need to think outside the box sinse everything else seems not to cooperate, I´ll start my project this month

But the barring gene decreases dermal melanin so it seems to be a losing battle.

On page 155 on variations in the color of the skin under melanin in the epidermis it states:

Genes that reduce the amount of black in the plumage, such as baring, columbian restriction and spangling also reduce the amount of black in the shanks and beak. (condensed)

pips&peeps :

Not when you think outside the "Box" I can´t coment on my methods here untill I get the genetic theory to reflect on real birds first and not in my head

I took some of my crappy pics out and put some fresh ones in. Some of them look so bad right now- feathers everywhere. But- it should work out so that by the time I have the lav roos back in for a few weeks they'll all be laying again

Nicalandia if you need some eggs to get started let me know a.s.a.p. Going to play musical coops real soon. I don't have much hopes of them ever being accepted, just wanted to have the lav cuckoos for yard candy and get the color out there.
