pips&peeps :

But the barring gene decreases dermal melanin so it seems to be a losing battle.

On page 155 on variations in the color of the skin under melanin in the epidermis it states:

Genes that reduce the amount of black in the plumage, such as baring, columbian restriction and spangling also reduce the amount of black in the shanks and beak. (condensed)

Jean, what is the book you are referring to here?

(PS. Kids are doing GREAT. Growing like bad weeds. Both Blues are nutty friendly. Total lap birds. Black are complete opposite! Won't have anything to do with me.

Here's an example of horrible breeding practices at thier best:

"Oh my poor rooster I have had for a year never had any girls that were the same color as him, so we're going to hatch every egg possible from him now, even though he's a poor example of the breed. "

OMG
! It's like a gold mine of turn of the century AG! I did a quick search for chickens and have already added 6 books to the "gotta read" list. Stopped before I searched for poultry, thought I would OD!

Ok one more time please... I have pulled the "Gentle Giant" out of the pen with the other lav roo and I am rethinking not keeping him. Again I am new to all this and want to make the best choice for breeding. To me, he looks as good as the med sized roo only he is bigger, a lot bigger. He is very gentle didn't fight me at all, was very easy to pick up, I like that... not that I keep these for pets.

Here is Jumbo Lav Roo
