Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I prefer toe punching as to both the above. No need to ever remove them. No worries about forgetting and having them squeeze into the leg. No falling off. No losing one. No getting them mixed up. Do it once and it's done forever.

God Bless,

Heya TF where do you get your toe punch?
I need to order one as I agree with you.

I don't get how a toe punch would work to identify multiple lines- just punch different spots on the foot? Not much room for error there.

Was gonna ask same question. Do you punch different shapes? Stars moons? Lol that was a joke.
But please explain toe punching?

I only have a line of AM but hatch a bunch OE's EE's and mutt bantams (working on something there..)
I want to be able to tell which is OE, EE, or pure......
I had a accident with 2 cockerels both black both almost perfect AM looks/quality but 1 came from a blue egg and 1 came from a maran egg..... Never could tell which was which...

Hi Dellana, you know, it's been so long I'm not sure now but I think it was Smith's Poultry. They were like $3.95 so I asked them if I could just buy a couple and have them put them in the envelope with their current catalog instead of paying the shipping charge which would've been like $10-15 or something. They did. Might try that too.

Btw, did you happen to see my post about the camera & gear I just bought? Can't wait to get it. It's OTW as I speak! Should be here in a couple of days!

God Bless,

Hold your hands out in front of you fingers extended, and pretend your fingers are chicken toes for a visual of "inner", "outer", "left", and "right". You can curl your pinkies under if that helps.

Between left outer toe and middle toe = #1
Between left middle toe and inner toe = #2
Between Right inner toe and middle toe = #4
and between right middle toe and right outer toe = #8

combine them to come up with every number in between.

if you need more, open the hole up and it turns into a "slit" and you have # +1, etc.

Paul Smith taught me that. The toe punch is a very small hole-punch like device that removes about a 2mm diameter circle shaped piece of tissue in the web between two toes. If you have arthritis, they are hard to use, because they are so stinkin small. The bird will holler and the hole does bleed a little, some bleeding more than others. I promise it won't die unless you squeeze it (the chick) to death. It will make a scab and quickly heal. If you don't get a clean cut hole, the web can grow back. If you aren't careful with persistent scabs, it can grow back closed. It does require a little maintenance until healed, but then it lasts the lifetime of the bird. Judges don't give them a second look. I toe punch a hatch, but if I keep multiple birds from that hatch, I like to be able to tell them apart from a distance, hence the zip ties.

Mine came from Cutler supply. I wish someone would make one with bigger handles, just like a hand-held single hole paper holepunch. Just smaller holes.

Or maybe I just need to buy a new one that is sharp.

I'm looking for helpful feedback on these two cockerels. I'm still working on my 'eye' for picking out my AM for my breeding pens. Thank you!
