Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I tried to work backwards to find this thread and got so many hits for "ameraucana" and "lavender ameraucana" that I'm afraid newcomers may not be able to find us. I know we will probably lose some really good experience....Harry (Shaffer) has dial up and a slow connection which probably won't support all the Javascript advertising. I'm not sure about Royce (Tailfeathers). Jean is still around. Jeanine has posted some at other places and I saw something by Illia. Hopefully everyone will come back around.

Yeah, I'm here, and I'm reading.... ;)

I am fairly sure that a White Ameraucana rooster over a White Ameraucan hen will result in White Ameraucana chicks which sometimes look pale yellow at birth but change to full white. I am about to find out as I have eggs in the incubator. It is in the crossing of White with a different color that they may not be pure white but since white is recessive they will carry that gene and the next generation will show more variation in colors. I know little but am just learning so some one may jump in here to fix this. But sometimes those who are very experienced as Jerryse and Pips&Peeps start at a point that beginners can not follow.

Jerry, Truer words have not been spoken. I wrote this one down...do you know who should I credit it to? or is it one of those anonymous things that no one gets credit for?
This forum is one that I learn so much from. Thanks everyone.

I think that I picked that up years ago in a readers digest.Don't remember who to credit.

Sorry if I confused anyone.Dominate white hatch yellow recessive white are usually smokey at hatch but can vary depending on what color they are based on.2 copies of recessive white can cover any color.2 copies of dominate white can also cover most colors but is not as effective on red.Ameraucana are recessive but not always.I have been developing dominate white in bantam and large. The advantage of this is 1 copy of dominate gives a mostly white bird with some color showing.Easier to weed out after a cross.

Exactly the point I was trying to convey. I just don't recommend crossing lines for "newbies". It takes alot of recording keeping to do something like what Jerry has suggested; he has alot of experience with this breed.

Jean is right and I sometimes forget what it was like when I didn't know some of these things.I encorage you to learn by reading and by experience.I will try to pass on what I know.I have tried many color crosses that most avoid.Mostly because I want to know.I will try to post a picture of a pen of birds I used this year. The hens are from a buff x white mating .I had no wheatens to use and only1 project buff rooster to use due to a predator attack in mid day while they were out on free range.Nobody would think to use these as breeders but I believed I could bring them back to buff.I will try to get pics of the ones I saved from this mating tomorrow.Sort of a picture guide on what happened.

Now those hens are half white.I know the whites I have are based on black and with only 1 copy of recessive white it shows up.So there is a example of what is hidden. No barring,no blue ,no silver. No big surprizes here. You only find out when you make a cross as white can hide any color.

I was told that my whites are recessive but aren't there two copies of the color gene in each bird? And if one is dominate and the other not, would that account for some chicks being a different shade ? What if some are smoky and some pale yellow ?
