Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

They run very small and there just aren't alot of people with them. The females tend to have a leghorn type look in the tail. The egg color is very light, almost non existant, they are the palest blue of all the varieties.

I crossed my birds with blacks last fall and will be putting the F1 pullets back with the silver cockerel and a F1 cockerel over the silver hens this year. I made sure to only hatch the blue eggs.

When the new standard comes out, I think it is supposed to refer you to the silver dutch description, not silver duckwing.

If you were to improve your line with the blacks, make sure you use a black with slate legs and not black. That will indicate that the black bird is carrying birchen genes and you will start with the silver in the background already, it's just hiding.

I think they are still small enough to ship in a single stall, but you need to check this out:

Wow, that's definately a lot to consider. Sounds like a lot of work ahead. Thanks for explaining.

Are the F1's solid black? Will you get some silvers in the F2 generation? Sounds like you have a good plan. I may be better off waiting for some of them then.

Just saw the last part of your post. You know I had trouble getting a live bird last year, a Bev Davis Blue Wheaten Marans. He was sent back, with the message that they didn't accept live birds! Big problem was that the breeder wasn't home to accept the bird back! Luckily someone at the post office had a heart and some sense, and got her husband that works for the airlines to find him a flight out. He went another route and I got the bird a day late but he was in good health. I wondered then how they could have done such a thing as turn a bird away. Maybe instances like that were what lead up to this embargo.

Some of my males have had silver hackles and saddles in the F1 line, but the females are black.

I just got off the phone with the AR Dept of AG. There is no embargo on live birds.

We need to contact these post offices or distribution centers to find out what the heck this is about. I have phone numbers and people's names they can call to verify.

We need to get to the bottom of this, it's a bunch of pooey!

PM me with your city please and I will call the USPS and get the distribution center info.

I finally found out through calling around that it was just that particular flight that wouldn't except him and had him sent him back. They said that sometimes that airline carries things that are dangerous for the birds (such as dry ice) and the birds get bumped and have to be sent back, so it was probably something like that. I wonder if it's this same sort of thing this time.

You would think! It was crazy and I was a nervous wreck waiting.

I have to run and may not be back online until late tonight or tomorrow but I'm anxious to hear what you find out on the embargo.

The bird is supposed to go on the next flight out when that happens.

Yes, that's exactly what is supposed to happen! I worked as a courier for awhile and, unfortunately, most of the airline personnel are not trained in shipping protocol! The gal at United Airlines told me that no one has ever given her any training on shipping procedures (we shipped cord blood and lab animals through them). She said she had to figure it out for herself and she was the only one in the department that knew how to do it! It's pretty bad when the only person in the entire department that knows how to handle shipments is doing it on guesswork!!! You'd think that as much money as they charge for shipping they'd spend a little time training their personnel.

We had much better luck with Southwest.

Thank you MPC for taking an educated stand and raising the bar for the other hatcheries.
You get what you pay for, so $8.00 eggs wont be at the same level
as breeder quality eggs but it could be a good way for someone to get interested in a breed
and go from there.

Yes, MPC is the only hatchery I've seen that actually distinguishes EEs from Ameraucanas. They sell Easter Egger chicks, but no Ameraucana chicks. I'm sure the eggs they advertise as Ameraucana eggs are true Ameraucana eggs. I give them kudos too.

Jean..you can send those pullets in my direction

I think your right though about only hatching pullets.I need to get some new pictures of the kids but they have real small girly legs SO where do I find a good roo or should I cross these back onto black? Their size isn't very bad now...the Buff is a little small but seems to be catching up some. The Silvers may need work but they can live at my house any day while we work on those egg colors and "little" things
