Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I have yokohamas, orpingtons and ameraucans, LUCKILY the only ones of breeding age right now are my sweet little ameraucana pair, allthough I have my roo quarenteend as he is new (and I wanted him to grow his muff back without hens picking it out...), and the wire cage is tearing UP his tail feathers, I am in the process of figuring something else out....question though. When I got him the guy told me that it is common for the hens to "lovingly" pick at the muff. Is this true? He is growing it back since being isolated. Which is good because I want toshow him in october (bringing me back to the got to figure better living arrangements out to fix tail feathers

I have never heard of that. If they are picking out the beard, it could be because of protein deficiency? I have my group in my brooder right now. It is nice and big 8 x 3.5 feet, and I don't know the height of it.

Here it is, minus the heat lamps and add a roost. I plan to build them an outdoor area soon, but they have never been outside before. I want it to be fully enclosed. These little guys are too hard to find to risk losing them!

Yes, they pic the beard. It isn't malicious. Its chicken love!!!!! I take the roosters out in July to get them ready for fall, some people probably do it earlier. Just depends on the hatches/weather. It could be a protein issue if they are aggressive about it. I know mine have plenty of protein. I found the ultimate feed. They are eating it, and I don't have to give meat on the side because it is already in the crumbles. It is a broiler formula that is unmedicated. It ADM Pen-Pals Meatmaker. I feed it to everybody. I use grains, fruits, veggies, seeds, and nuts to cut down the fat for the for the breeders. I give them free choice grit, oyster, and free-range them. They are doing great!!!

That's why they are so blue!! :) Just gorgeous. They have a sheen to them that brings out the color.
Lark Rise - Color me JEALOUS! Madelynbelle's eggs are gorgeous, all shiney and blue. I was so pleased with her hatching eggs but unfortunately they didn't develop.

Jealous, jealous, jealous.

Hi!

Quick question, at about what age would a cockerel start to have his comb turn red and get bigger and raised?

Thanks.
