Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Shanks on a black bird are supposed to be very dark slate to black.
Oh, Thank you!! I am in good shape there then. My breeding program is going ok then. My only problem is the leakage in the roo. The beard color on the girls is a result of them free ranging, and I can live with that, we only show a couple of times a year. I do think I will try to find a black rooster that didn't come from lavender split stock.

Thanks everyone, I am learning a lot from following this thread, the feed back and sharing of information and ides are priceless.

Question along the recent lines of leakage vs sun damage. This is the splash cock I have here. He is finally molting in new sickles and a few other feathers... like his BEARD and muffs. He looked stupid without them. As you can see he has this wheat color on his feathers. None of the new feathers come in with it. I am assuming this is because he is out in the sun and always has been a ranger but I would like that confirmed. Please.

In my opinion, his leakage is too heavy to be considered sun damage. Most often the leakage on males is in the areas of the saddle, hackle, and shoulder feathering. He is spot on with his off coloring being in these exact areas. It is rather heavy leakage and tends to show some orangy coloring which might indicate earlier lines in his ancestry to be carry red/gold.

Well that certainly makes sense for the area. I wonder why when he molts these in they aren't bronze. Of course the woman who sold him to said he didn't molt in two years but I think she just missed it. Stinks but is what I thought might be true. Now I am back on the hunt for another splash male...

Anyone out there with Jean's (pips&peeps) line willing to ship a small order of day-olds to Texas? Her birds were so gorgeous, good natured, and healthy and her wheaten/blue wheaten eggs were so blue that now I'm spoiled!

I'd LOVE a mix -a couple each of wheaten, blue, lavender, white, and black. Would also be interested in a few first generation olive eggers (if you've crossed her hens with a Marans roo) to help make the chick count go up. We're wanting a little color around here again!

Thanks!

Hey, my daughter just told me a friend of hers from college wrote a cute children's book about hatching chickens so I downloaded it to my Kindle Fire. It was wonderful and accurate! It's called Samantha Hatches the Chicken Egg by Daisy Griffin. If you have kids or grandkids, this is a great book to tell them about hatching eggs. Enjoy! oh yea, she also mentions BYC in the book!!!!

OMG......that so cute........

I have several EE's that are sweet and pretty but I wanted to get some pure Ameraucana chicks. I bought some eggs from someone on here and also from someone on Ebay. The Ebay eggs were listed as "PURE" Blue and Wheaten Ameraucana. 17 out of the 20 eggs hatched and I have some really cute chicks but I think they are EE's. The leg color looks off. Can you tell by looking at the pics if these are EE or true Ameraucana?
