Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I have EE too that I bought from a seller in PR. She sold them as Ameraucana too. But I honestly don't think she knew any better. I have a feeling mine are hatchery birds because of the green legs. I also ordered pure Ameraucana eggs. a few of mine hatched... and I have a few more in the bator too.. Here's to PURE Ameraucana Chickens in Puerto Rico...lol

Want me to post something on his FB...? I am moving in 6 months so I don't mind respectfully showing him the difference. If 2 ppl say something, then he might realize there are too many ppl here that know the difference. I have a chicken breeder here that has been asking me to sell him my EE (4 hens and 1 roo) ... but I am afraid he might do the same thing...(sell them as Ameraucana)

He is making a business out of it and thats ok. We had been talking and exchanging views...my part more concreate info. He told me he got them at cackle hatchery and that a EE and a ameraucana is the same...I gave him all kind of info and links even to the ABC. I'm sure he did not read it and just told me It was great I was getting great stock of ameraucanas but his ameraucanas were just for backyard use
barnie.gif
. And the people buying from him just want them for eggs. I dont know if my explanation was correct because I dont know about RIRs and red stars....but looking for info I read you make a red star with a RIR and some other breed....so I told him that saying his ee's are ameraucanas are like saying his red star are RIR's. The red star may have some of the RIR,s blood but they are not the same....
Do someone knows something about what cackle uses to breed their "ameraucanas"?

Do you ever get frustrated that people INSIST that Ameraucana's only lay green eggs and tell you that it's the Easter Eggers that are the true Ameraucana's? Does this make sense?

I was told my pure bred Ameraucana's were another breed because they lay a pure blue egg. They said that I had Auracanda's(sp). It kind of ticked me off because I've spent so much money trying to hatch out my own pure black Ameraucana hens for us to show. I do not own any rumpless chickens with large muffs. This was told to me not on this site either.

My husband did not see a single Ameraucana at the last show he attended. Maybe once we start showing, my girls might be able to get a ribbon. They'd be so happy no matter what placing they got.

I know it's just the Internet, but I've invested so much time and money so far to get what I want. I'll be starting over in the spring since I think I have only one female out of the ones I kept.

I have 2 splash and a black. I might just keep the blue on blue splash for 4-H showing and for fun. We love the look even though it's not a recognized color. They are roughly 2.5 weeks old. The white/blue splash will most likely be rehomed in the spring after I grow her out.

These are not the greatest photos of the chicks, but here they are. I pray my black is a female!!! And that's there's zero feather leakage.

So far these three have great calm temperaments. They are not skittish as I thought they would be. I rehomed all the blues and other black.

I absolutely adore these guys. I can't wait to hatch more. I'm looking for some really nice hens and will buy strictly from the breeders list from now on whether I buy hatching eggs or day old chicks. I love black and I love black, white, buff and blue wheaten in colors.

I almost kept this one, but I think there was barring on the tip of the wing.

I know a few people like that, Nicole. It used to frustrate me, but now I know who has the "I've got my mind made up, don't confuse me with facts" mentality and don't worry about it.
I didn't see any Ameraucana at the one and only show I went to, either.
Good luck!

It can be REALLY hard to communicate with someone about the Ameraucana vs. Easter Egger issue.

I added a "How to tell a chicken's breed" page on www.PoultryPedia.com
because of my frequent frustration about this. It mostly addresses the more general issues behind the controversy. I hope it will help a number of people learn more about the bigger picture principles behind calling a particular chicken a member of a particular breed.

You cannot judge what a chick is going to turn out like at the age of your birds you have posted in your photo. Let these guys grow out all the way and then look them over. Leakage generally shows up on a cockerel close to 20 weeks.

I thought I saw in a post where a hen had leakage in her beard. I'm not sure if I'm keeping a boy or not. I'm a little apprehensive about roosters due to aggression, so if I do keep one I need a really nice tempered one. I'd like hens that lay nice blue eggs too.:) Even if there is barring in the wings off the chicks, won't that show in the adults?

Just a general question. Does the comb on wheaten roo look different than on a Blue/wheaten roo. I have one of each I think at 11 weeks old, according to the coloring and can not make up my mind if the wheaten is just a very dark hen or a roo.. Gloria jean

So how many chicks hatched again. You re-homed all the blue and splash??? You can show the splash in the Any other variety class, and blue is a recognized color??? They are way to young to judge anything. I hope you know you might of re-homed some chickens, that you might regret. I am saying everyone has there own way of culling and such.........................unless you wanted all black chickens then disregard what I am saying.

Hi Nicole,
Chicks change so much as they mature. That is half the fun. I have one blue hen, who looked barred as a chick, but her mature feathers show no barring. She doesn't have show quality color though. I have never seen another blue Ameraucana with barred feathers. Most of my blue chicks show good dark edging, kind of outlining the the feather, and you want this. In fact one of the members on this thread is working on a breeding project to improve the lacing (the dark rim around blue feathers). I am going towards an all black flock, because my blues don't have the correct lacing. It will be easier to for me at this point to just work on having nice blacks.
It was my pullets we were talking about the beards showing come red color, and they didn't have leakage, just high lights from to much sun.

I raise my flock organically and free range, so some fading of feathers in the sun is not surprising. I would rather live with a bit of sun damage than stop free ranging my birds. My young rooster has leakage in his hackles, but they just started showing up this month, and he hatched in Feb, it really does take a long time.

I only thin my chicks out at that stage of the ones you have pictured based on size and sex. I once read an article that said that you could improve the growth rate and size of you flock by only selecting the chicks with the biggest bone structure. The article went on to say that when they are little, you select them by how fat their heads are. The fatter the head the bigger boned and faster growing the chicks will be. So I look for fat heads (I am breeding for more growth) and look for 3 rows of dots in the combs (this always means boy). So I only cull early for small bone structured boys, because my luck has always been to hatch more boys than girls, and I am afraid I will inadvertently cull all my pullets.

I just hatched some lavs from chicks that a friend bought from Blehm this spring!
As well as 6 wheatens, and a few EE.

The EE are my favorite of the hatch, hatchery barred rock roo crossed with wheaten hen :)
