Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I sold 7 cockerels (6 Lavs and 1 Mott) for $20 yesterday to a family who eats them. It's that time of year where I culled down to a single Lav cockerels. He's on the bubble as I plan for more splits next year with a Black cockerel. Also sold the lower 1/2 of the Lav pullets as layers.

I kill all the cockerels unless they are superior. The pullets/hens are given away only to someone that wants layers. Sell almost nothing anymore. Don't want to see culls back into the breeding pool.

I only give away a rooster after he has made it here on the farm until at least 5-6 months old. I cull a lot of birds, I just want the nice looking birds to get a chance. I always grow out some of my roosters, I want to see how they turn out.

You are fortunate you live near Larry C. I grow them also but start culling at day old. If their color is off or they are weak or the muffs and beards are not pronounce they get culled immediately. From that point on they are reviewed bi-weekly for defects and culled again. Too many birds to feed for the cost of feeding now-a-days. Since I don't sell there is no financial return. I use to take them to the auctions but then people would buy the culls and the following year you would see either eggs or chicks being sold out of the culls. Don't feel that is helping the hobby. I would like to give them away to just a backyarder but chances are they will see dollar signs and progress with trash.

Yes, I am!!! He is a great mentor! So is the Kitsch family. We get to "share" our birds, and help judge them, and discuss breeding pens, etc....................... I am very lucky to have so many people that are close.

I cringe when I hear all this rooster culling talk. I've been after a nice (really nice) wheaten roo for at least 6 months now. Mine is nice, but I have a flock of mostly blues and splash wheatens because he's blue wheaten. And I want to bring in new lines and more size. My crew is on the thin built side.

I have one of the Kitsch cockerels, a blue, from Larry C's stock who is available! He is ~6 months old, VERY nice, easy to hold. I'd love to find a true home for him.
He was originally sexed a girl but you know how mistakes can happen.

I'd love to find a real home for him. He's a lovely boy but I can't have roosters. Please let me know if you know of anyone....! I am near Philadelphia, PA. I don't want him to go to the auction but I am running out of options.

Apologies about the up-side down pix below. I don't know how it happened and I can't seem to fix it. :(

What should I be looking for in choosing a BWA roo? I have 5 roos to choose from. This one is the oldest at 8 months. The others are about 6 months. I'll try to get pics of them as soon as I get them out of the grow-out pen. Can you give me a critique of this roo? Thanks.

Be still my heart. He looks really good for being 8 months- great color especially. Keep an eye on his comb- you want it nice and tight.
