Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I totally agree. Sadly I lost my other roo to an injury.
So you have two choices.
1) Breed him to females with better tail sets, grow out a bunch of chicks and dump him in favor of a better son next year.

2) Find another cock. Not really that hard to do. Put the word out on the ABC forum and expect to pay for shipping. It is not the end of the world to wait a year even if you have to grow out chicks. The birds will be there next year. Think long term. Better to feed a few quality birds than a bunch of not-so-great ones.

I bet I raised 12-15 Lavender cockerels this year. Only one had the tail I wanted and was aiming for this past breeding season, but I don't grumble to myself now everytime I walk by my Lavender pen.

So true! Besides if they were all perfect where would the challenge be? Right?

I feel your pain. I had a cockerel that I posted a few months back, he had the same problem. He had great qualities in other areas. I just hated his back/tail. I spoke to the person who bred the line or strain I forget what the right term is, and they said that runs in it. Especially for the roosters, he is no longer here......................
Here are a few more pictures of my cockerel. He is about 6 months old, maybe a little less.

NoseyChickens,
I like his hackles--they are distinctive. His comb, muffs & beard are very nice, too. You will get some good, strong qualities in your chicks from him; you'll just have to breed for refinement in the tail.

I think when you are considering whether a bird is worth breeding or not, structural faults have to be considered as more serious. Judges don't seem to be overly critical of a slightly larger comb, but a bad tail and your a goner.

hi, i have a question for all, i was given two blue eggs a couple of months ago by a man that i can't remember who he was or what he said the chickens were that laid them, anyway, both hatched so now i need to figure out what they are, anyway, they have "muffs" and turquoise colored legs,
and no, i can't get pictures to download on here to show you, not that smart. i guess i'm asking you to guess, i think the man told me that they were ameraucana's or maybe araucana's but they do have tailfeathers, and the araucanas don't?
thanks for trying to help me in advance.

They are Easter Eggers, most people call them Ameraucanas but they are not.
