Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Thanks. I actually joined the ABC yesterday. I'll speak with John. I would really love to sort soemthing out for the early part of next year. Would be so exciting!
Yes you should talk to John B. because if you can not import them then you can also make your own. He would be the best to tell you what to cross your UK Araucanas to remove the crest and put the correct body type on them. Good luck.

Lavender hens from Dak's eggs, hatched April 2012:

Cynthia

Chloe:

And here's a black roo from Cackle Hatchery, Malcom:

These three are my only Ameraucanas right now. Would like more eventually, but may just hatch my own. Would like a critique of these, if anyone is interested, just for my own education. I will keep these in any event as they are very friendly, sweet birds, and I'm rather attached to them.

Cynthia has a single comb, so you won't want to use her for breeding. You don't know what the breeding is on the black bird from Cackle, so that would also be another bird I wouldn't recommend breeding from.

Chloe looks pretty nice, just slightly pinched in the tail, I would use her.

Thanks for responding! I really appreciate it.

You know what, I misspoke (or mis-typed). That roo is actually from Chickenscratch Poultry- the "William Morrow" line- not Cackle. So he might still work. I think that maybe his comb is nice, but his beard is slightly red on the end, if you look at it in the right light. Where should an Ameraucana's tail be placed? His seems rather low to me, maybe even lower than a 45 degree angle. I'd get a bunch of black babies if I bred him to Chloe, of course.

It sure would be nice to get a good lavender rooster. Maybe I will search for one next spring.

Breed him to Chloe, then bred a male from that breeding back to her or breed the splits together and you will get 25% lavs. Don't worry too much about a low tailset. Most of the Lavs tend to be too high. You will get some you like. Think numbers. Breed a bunch and cull heavily. Be prepared to raise/feed them awhile til you can sort them.

Hi Dak! Will do. With only these three Ameraucanas there is plenty of room in their coop for extra birds. It will be a fun project for spring. :)

Can we talk egg color? I am looking to get a quad of BBS AM but it seems that when I get eggs shipped to me or someone claims to have PURE Am....the eggs aren't very blue or worse...they are green.

Where can I find bright blue AM eggs?

Maybe when you find them, you can let us all know???

I think you will find if you look an Ameraucana egg colour card, you will find there are a lot of shades varying from "green" to blue. You might not find the "bright blue" you are looking for in the B/B/S variety but if you do, I'm sure we'd ALL love to hear about it.

So its the BBS that have the weaker egg color? What bird color is a good place to start? I like the BBS but I'm really interested in getting good egg color first.

I don't have a color card but when I have 2 black AM that are supposed to be pure....one lays a blue egg...and one lays a green egg.. UGH. Now the problem is which one is laying which egg!! LOL

B/B/S are not necessarily famous for their spectacular bright blue eggs at this point. That is not to say some don't lay pretty nice blue eggs. I only work with B/B/S so I am going from memory but I believe I have heard that Wheatens are doing pretty well in the bright blue egg department. Hopefully, somebody else will chime in.

Then all you have to do is convince the producer of those fabulous blue egg laying chickens to sell you some!!!
