More than you think.... I am starting to think about a 3rd for my backup backup. What do you do when your backup dies and you are down to just the one again.... or worse your main roo dies.....

I have about 30 of breeding age.... and maybe 10 more growing out. The other roos will not make the next cut... well most. I lost my Blue Copper Marans roo the other day and I don't have a backup, but I still have enough Copper Marans roos so I am fine, but it sure will throw a wrench in your plans when you lose one you NEED and don't have an alternate.

Reyvaugn, do you ever sell chicks/eggs/pullets? I have two blue wheaten cockerels but wasn't able to get my hands on any wheaten girls this year. That is one variety I would really like to have, and it seems like you might not be too far away.

I sell eggs when I have them and none are laying. I hatch out about 40 chicks for a swap in Sharpsburg, MD every June, too. I don't ship, though. I am actually looking for a new rooster - a wheaten out of Paul or Jean's lines with exceptional quality. It is Christmas time... I may be able to talk Dewey (OH) into letting me ship one in if I stay away from horses and snowmobiles this year. Let the bribery begin!

Do you have a waiting list? I'd love to get some eggs from you, whenever you have some. I am very close to the PA border, so hopefully you're within driving distance.

Kahlua, just a quick note to say I noticed you have Spangled Orloffs. Do you also have any Mahogany? Also thought you'd like to know that there may be an effort soon to get the Orloffs put back in the book.

On another note, I noticed there was a lot of talk a couple pages back about egg color again. What was strikingly noticeably missing was the lack of BG mentioning how the birds laying those "green" eggs should not be called Ameraucanas and/or should not be shown because they didn't lay a "blue" egg. So am I to gather than a green egg is ok but a white egg laid from a hen that used to lay a light blue egg is not?

God Bless,

God Bless,

What was pointed out is that "blue" and "green" are very often in the eye of the beholder as is also VERY apparent on the Ameraucana egg colour chart that has MANY shades of green/blue depending on how you choose to define it.

"Christie Rhae"

Lark your eggs are amazing.  I am just starting to get eggs from my John Blehm pullets.  I carried my eggs all over the house trying to get the right light to photograph them.  For some reason I am having trouble capturing the color today.  They are much more vibrant and turquise-ey to my eyes than this pic.  The one on the left I think is a B6.  If anyone knows where to get A7 color Let me know!  lol

I have 7 black am cockerels that I need to thin down.  Anyone got some pointers?  I am looking at combs, tail angles, beards, angle of the back, wide set legs... anything else?  I might have to go out and take a whole mess of pics of them.  They are getting REALLY noisy and my husband wants me to cull soon.   Gosh how can I kill a John Blehm black Ameraucana?  Almost feels like a sin.

Christie,

I know exactly how you feel I got black Ameraucanas from John this spring too. Only my pullets aren't laying yet. :( I have 5 cockerels and need to get rid of some soon. But who and what if I make the wrong choice?? As they mature things seem to keep changing with each one. I'm not sure how long to wait to decide. If you take pics, share them please. I've thought about pics too.
