Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

So if I see someone stealing from another, I should just look away?
It would be very unethical . And probably not the best interest of the club either. We all have morals to upstand. Did they get permission from the photographer to use these photos for their website?

I've seen those photos somewhere...Cottage? Beautiful pictures!

How would you feel if someone took your photo, sell it online as their birds and when you see that ad, hoping for some black and blues but didn't hatch out any like that, got green legs...you would be certainly disappointed.

I've had an Ebay seller using one of my old Faverolle bantam as their Ebay selling point. One of the buyers informed after hatching out these wild calico Faverolles (maybe EEs), the seller got tarred and feathered by other buyers and it was not pleasant at all. But the point was taken and that seller never again posted anyone else's pictures but their own.

Just be a good example, a good steward for the breed club and just post your own pictures of your own birds so the buyers knows what exactly they are getting.

Just a quick stop in to introduce myself to you guys. I am new to chicken keeping and have always been drawn to the Ameraucana breed. I currently have three two-week-old chicks that have stolen my heart. The breeder I chose seemed to know his stuff online but I am worried that I may have fallen prey to the EE trick. Should they all have pronounced tail feathers and beards (tufts) by now? Only one of mine does.

Regardless, hello!

Hello! Just a quick queston....if ameracuanas are pure should their eggs be blue? I have done some research on them but just want opinions...
The standard calls for sky blue. Some projects and some bloodlines are more greenish.None should be olive.Egg color selection should be a priority.

Beards should be visible at hatch.Tufts and rump less are araucana traits.

No, Ameraucanas do not need to have blue eggs to be pure. They can have blue/green or white or even tan eggs and still be pure Ameraucanas. The body and colors make the breed - not the eggs. HOWEVER - the breed was created around a blue egg gene - so many people breed for the blue eggs - so you are more likely to get blue or blue/green than any other color.

Two things could be going on here. Some birds have good beards when born but as the new feathers come in the beards fall behind on the growth. It can look like they don't have beards until they get their final feathers - but the gene is there. Another thing that has happened in some breeders (but they tell their customers) is that they have has some clean faced birds hatch out because some of their flock (including the rooster) has only one bearded gene. So unbearded can happen.

Tail feathers? Well.. that depends on the breeding. My EE roosters had no tailfeathers for the longest time - he finally grew them in. My Ameraucanas have both short and long tail feathers - and I am testing now to see if these lines allow feather sexing (both wing and tail) to tell who is male and who is female. I have heard from a few breeders that long tail feathers are girls and short are boys.

Oh, and Jerry is right - no tail feather and no tail (rumpless) are Auracana breedings - as is the tufts that grow from the sides of their heads. It is not from Ameraucanas.

All that above.. if they have YELLOW skin on the bottoms of their feet when they grow up (not as babies - lots of babies have yellow feet when little) - or green legs - then bearded or unbearded they aren't considered Ameraucanas - they are EEs.

Not ALL of them would have tail feathers and beards. Some have missing tails or beards or both.Genetics sometimes play havoc on breeders sometimes. Do you have pictures?

Thanks or the input. My one little girl who had a very pronounced beard and tail feathers also unfortunately appears to have very dark feet. Based on what I've read and seen, this isn't true of the breed. Even if the other two develop the beard and tail characteristics, the fact that my one has dark legs and feet would lead me to believe I have adopted mutts. I paid extra for the Ameraucana breed chicks. Is there any way to know for certain at this stage? Would there be any recourse with the breeder for misrepresentation?
Mutt or not, I adore my girls and will cherish them regardless. But I really am disappointed.

Pics are on my main profile page. I do have more but will have to link them from my photobucket. No great shots of feet/legs.
