Those Orp bantam moms were so devoted to ONE little chick, taking turns feeding it and so forth. But the other meanie, the Blue Amer. Bantam would peck at the chick if it ever leaves its moms sides. Well, somehow the chick was in the open, not following moms, that Blue Am took her chance to kill it. Picked it up and threw it around. I caught her doing that a few times with the chick I picked her up and toss her little butt outside. This time, she killed it and those Orp moms whined, loudly pop-cluck at it to get it up but the chick was too far gone and too cold to the touch. It was barely alive, so I ended it and took it away immediately after I tossed some grain out for them. I heard some fighting among the sis and Am bantam hen....either they are pounding her butt for killing their chick or thinking she kidnap them LOL! The Amer. Bantam hen lost a few feathers by those Orp sisters.
Today it was settled down but grumblings by the Orp sisters can be heard. I am going to give them a week to see if they would either snap back being broody again or give up until fall. Right now I would like them to snap out of it because they have lost weight during broody time. If they can wait until June or July, all for the better. Then I might have to order from hatchery for 15 chicks or hatch some out myself. They were excellent moms last year for my Spitz chicks and the black one was so devoted to them. When her chicks got new homes, she was MAD, I mean MAD! Chased everyone in the run, screeching and running around like a banshee and it took her a few days to realize that her chicks were old enough to be on their own and new homes.
It is a real treasure to have those Orp sisters being so devoted to this little Amer. banty chick that I hatched out from Amer. Mom in Greencastle, IN. It was a beautiful chick! He got the biggest muff I saw on a banty chick LOL!
