Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I see lavenders described as light blue. Genetically, what makes them different from a darker blue? I thought blue came in many shades and didn't know people were labeling them as different color varieties.

Here are a few I hatched out a couple days ago. Notice that one is much lighter than the others. I think the darkest one is a black and the middle one is a blue. Would the light blue be called lavender or is there something about lavender that makes it unique?

Lavender is a completely different gene than blue. It breeds true where blue does not. Lavender is lighter in color and there is no lacing/edging on their feathers.

Lavender is a totally different gene. I've also heard people say, "I think I have a Lavender, cause it's very light", but that's incorrect unless both Parents contributed the Lavender gene. This is also why it's not a great idea to have both Blue and Lavender in the same line. It can be confusing when you get a Lavender, light blue or splash chick and aren't sure which it is.

Jean, my first(EVER!) Ameraucana egg hatched!! Is this a blue, or splash?

Thanks, Cynthia! Keep your fingers crossed that the rest hatch. The PO lost my eggs for a few days. At least 4 looked to be developing normally, but of course you always worry

You can see my two blue chicks with the BCM's. This shot was a lot more fun for me than the chicks.
