Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I have several silver and wheaten chicks and am having a dickens of a time figuring out their sex. The wheatens all look alike @ 2+weeks, and so do the silvers @ 2 months. I should have taken more pictures of the parent birds as chicks, but didn't think to do it. I feel stupid not being able to figure out the sex of the older birds. Help!

hey everyone. Does anyone have a problem with their hens plucking the roos muff/beard? I have an awesome blue wheaten roo I hatched from Jean. He is 2 years old and wasn't dominant roo for the first year. I downsized(got rid of all other roos) as he was my favorite and he now free ranges with 20 girls. His beard disappeared this winter and still hasn't come back

. These are some of the same girls that while they were with my tufted araucana they removed their huge tufts.

Another question...does your roo have favorites? with all these girls he still has 2 blue wheaten girls he is making bald and is ALWAYS on them. for the first time since I have had chickens I think I am going to have to purchase saddles....

Yep, 9 weeks. Hatched on 2/11. I know the pics look like he's clean faced, but he does have a beard, it's just sparse, and the pics don't show it very well. The dark blue one has a better beard, but I just LOVE the lacing on the light blue one!! I'm going to keep him for a while at least, to see what his beard's going to do. I have another light blue chick that hatched 3/11, that I'm not sure about sex on yet...

Yes and Yes.
Last summer the one I was showing was in a pen with just one other hen to keep him looking good.
Then this past winter that Amer roo was favoring the Amer gals, and leaving the Marans alone. 2-3 months later all the eggs are fertile and my last hatch was all but one egg.
so..he may even it out (0:
My black roo has been picked clean on his beard. makes taking pics hard.
