Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

it looks close to cataracts, but i couldnt find close ups of the eye of blind chickens. I can try and get a picture of his eye, but when i hold him he closes it. so it could be a challange.

Mareks affects the iris and causes an irregularly shped pupil. A cataract whitens only the pupil, and does not affect the iris. cataract: Mareks: http://extension.usu.edu/files/publications/publication/AG_Poultry_2013-01pr.pdf http://www.merckmanuals.com/vet/mul...isease_in_poultry&Speed=256&Plugin=WMP&Error=
it dosent look like that picture and i thought its whole eye was whitened. I will look at its eye again and report back tonight. thank you for all the information. i had no idea terr was a thing such as ocular mareks

A scratch/infection to the cornea will cause it to go opaque (white). If you can get antibiotic drops from the vet (without any steroid, I believe) it might clear up.

If you are seeing a white spot on the surface of the eye that is kind of (but not necessarily) lumpy or has a bump in the middle, its probably a corneal scar. He probably did something goofy and poked himself in the eye. If he keeps it closed, especially when you try to get close to it, its probably uncomfortable and still healing and that's his way of keeping you from touching his already sore eye.

I blinded one of my girls this year by stepping on her head and breaking her eye orbit (my big stupid fat a**). She looked like Rocky Balboa for a couple of weeks, talk about feeling like dirt. She gets around fine and is really easy to catch from that side. The really ironic thing is that a week before I gave her a black eye, I fell off of a horse. I was wearing an ill-fitting helmet. I did my tuck and roll and landed on my back, my head hit the ground last, but it hit hard and the helmet did its job and protected the back of my head, but it was violently shifted forward onto my eybrow and it split my eyebrow and probably broke my orbit because i seriously looked like Rocky. All of my male, rugby playing friends were so jealous. But I digress.

If he's a really nice cockerel and you can confirm that its not Mareks and not a cataract and not eye worm or even glaucoma (you would know glaucoma though because the eye bulges and then gets entirely white and filmy), then I would chalk it up to a poke in the eye and breed him, but don't show him because its a DQ.

Thank you guys for all the information. The whole eye is one color, the other eye is completly fine. Everytime I pick him up he closes the bad eye and wont let me touch it. I will inspect my pen to see if there is anything that they can injury them selves on. I was really looking forward to showing him. Is there any chance that it will clear up and you wont be able to tell there was anything wrong with the eye? And after looking at the pic that sonoran silkies posted I am absolutley sure that he does not have mareks. I googled pics on google of cataracts and I found this pic
Avian-encephalomyelitis.jpg

This is exactly what the bad eye looks like. I went to the website this pic is from and it was talking about A.E. http://www.avpa.asn.au/veterinarian-support/avian-encephalomyelitis/ this is the website. He, and none of my other chickens, have any of these signs and act completl happy and healthy. The only thing the do remotley close to this is lay down to dust bathe. The descrption with the picture labeled it as blindness or catarcts. How do I tell which it is?

It sounds like an injury. If it is, I would think he needs antibiotic ointment for the eye. It might clear up on its own, but at the same time, it could get a lot worse. He could have scratched himself with his own toe nails. Or another chicken could have hurt him. Eyes heal really fast, but an infection can easily lead to blindness and scaring of the cornea.
